Alarming rise in abandoned pets sparks 'crisis point 😨😨😨😨 Animal rescue centers in the UK are facing a crisis due to a sharp rise in abandoned pets, largely driven by the aftermath of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis. Many centers, including Bristol ARC and Bath Cats and Dogs Home, are overwhelmed with animals needing complex medical care. The influx of unsocialized "pandemic pups" and rising costs are straining resources, with a 24% increase in animal intake at Bristol ARC. Despite community support, like fundraising efforts, rescue centers are urging owners to seek help early and act responsibly to avoid abandoning their pets. We want to give a shout-out to Independent Animal Rescue based in Durham, North Carolina. Independent Animal Rescue (IAR) is a non-profit group in the Triangle region of North Carolina that works to provide homes for hundreds of unwanted cats and dogs each year. Their mission is to rescue cats and dogs in need and reduce the suffering of unwanted animals through their adoption and community programs. IAR believes they can alleviate problems associated with dog and cat overpopulation and abandonment using a 3-pronged approach: (1) Rescue and adoption of unwanted and abused animals; (2) funding and providing spay/neuter services; (3) education and outreach on animal welfare to the community. A newsletter from Morning Brew hit my inbox with the following statistics: The number of stray dogs in US shelters has increased by 22% since 2021, per data from the Shelter Animals Count database. Canine deaths in shelters are up 27% from last year and 78% from 2021. The Bloomberg article is linked below. Those who work in rescue, unfortunately, knew this could happen. Most folks who adopt dogs are first time dog owners. They finally had the time to stay home, acclimate a dog and have a companion during difficult times. But then, they were called back to the office… and things got tricky. I’ve met a good number of pandemic dogs and the most common issues I see are: - Social awkwardness to full on reactivity towards dogs, humans and/or both - Separation anxiety Both difficult to handle during swift RTO mandates. We ask folks who adopt dogs to stand by them, but how can they when their livelihoods are at risk? These policies not only cause harm to humans. These policies are killing dogs. I repeat: Canine deaths in shelters are up 27% from last year and 78% from 2021. Champaign County Humane Society is now a shelter-member of the Home-to-Home network! Nationwide, shelter-dog populations have been extremely high, putting a strain on shelter staff and volunteers. Our kennels are full; Animal Control is full; other local rescues are full; other County facilities are full. While we remain committed to housing and rehoming pets here at the shelter, in order to help as many homeless pets as possible, we’ve decided to offer Home-to-Home as another way of helping pets and people find each other. Home-to-Home is an online platform through which pets needing homes can be found by people looking for pets! Individuals can post the animals they need to re-home, and people looking to adopt (or foster) a pet can search our affiliated Home-to-Home Page for local cats and dogs. CCHS screens new postings, but we don’t have any direct involvement in the adoption process. Home-to-Home provides owners guidance on responsibly rehoming their pet and does not allow the selling of animals for profit. ALWAYS ADOPT - DONT SHOP

In order to understand the overcrowding animal shelter epidemic, it's important to understand the difference between a rescue and an open county shelter. In general, an open county shelter is required to take every dog. Rescues are not. So every stray dog, and every owner surrender is taken into the shelter (yes, some do close open enrollment in crisis). Does that help to understand why shelters are overcrowded and euthanize for space? For me, there's a VERY sad difference. In a rescue, I generally have the luxury of time to help a dog. In a shelter, I do not have that luxury;-( I hope this helps.
