"Home is a feeling" We hosted a very insightful panel discussion in the office today on 'Belonging as an Immigrant'. This discussion was a partnership event with our internal Latin@ ERG for Latin Heritage Month (US), and the Black@ ERG as part of our Black History Month (UK/IRE) programming. So much can be learnt from just listening, and what made the experience that much better was the sharing of insights across cultures and communities. Thanks Chika Jones, Francisco Gandara, Sochi Nwora, Erica R. for recounting your experiences today, and of course Hatem Ayoub for the great hosting. I live in #London, a place where 40% of it's residents were born abroad, and 16% of the country were born abroad. This country has in my opinion a unique experience with immigration. With historic colonial and territorial ties to at least 94 present day countries (according to Statista), former #EU membership status, and global status as a financial hub (for now!). It's not hard to understand why we are the cultural #meltingpot we are here. The panel spoke on all things, #immigrant vs #expats, the weight of cultural representation, home-country perceptions, imposter syndrome, and assimilating into another country. Those who have migrated (by force or personal choice) have gone on a HUGE journey which is often is not for the weak. I had to end this post on a #food note as it was a massive part of the discussion too. As we are on the tail end of #LatinHeritageMonth it's only right for me to shout out my friends at Guanabana Restaurant serving up some crazy fusion #Caribbean and #Latin fusion dishes. Let's pay attention to the tea leaves. 9 years ago we established Snake Nation in Atlanta and shortly thereafter Cape Town, South Africa. At the time many a friend in the "industry" gave me the "you ok" talk? While at the time, it was a total adventure I took with my family, upon getting here, I soon understood that crushing youth unemployment gave even more importance to the mission of Snake Nation. What I've learned after almost a decade in Africa- A global African culture is a work in progress, long awaited, debated, loved and complex. Every ally matters in this mission. Pan Africanist began this mission pre civil rights movement. Our work today? We must work to strengthen , support and amplify the Atlanta- South Africa/Africa ties that are critical for the growth of the creative economy and the rise of Global African culture. In addition to cultural exchange programs that are needed, but capital investments in startups and creative companies, Tech companies , and infrastructure projects such as WestWood21 Creativity,Arts and Innovation district in SW ATL are also key steps towards the abundant future we are seeking for creators. It's exciting to see the mission alignment between Snake Nation, Prosper Africa and the #AtlantaPhambili initiative to increase trade and investment in Africa and the creative economy. It was an honour to speak with Ambassador Reuben Brigety, II, Lisa Walker and the esteemed panel, about the connection, connective tissue and real world impact programs like this can have. The reach of Black culture as the tip of the spear of American culture, is especially significant here in South Africa, as the gateway to Africa at large. There are parallels here, #Atlanta is that city, that platform, that creates opportunity for Black creative culture to thrive in America. 🍁 Indigenous History Month as an Immigrant 🍁 When I first learned about the Indigenous people in Canada, I knew they welcomed the colonizers but thought the two people had collaborated to build our current Canadian society. Although some of my understanding was correct, I was unaware of the horrific history until recent years. 💔 June is Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples who have lived on these lands for thousands of years. As settlers, we, the immigrants, have the responsibility to understand this part of Canada’s heritage, honour the original peoples' traditions, recognize their resilience, and acknowledge the ongoing challenges they face.🪶 At Little Way, we are committed to promoting cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. By understanding and honouring Indigenous histories and perspectives, we can create a more respectful and cohesive community. CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA. Africa's culture is a rich tapestry that has played a significant role in shaping the continent's development. The diversity of African cultures contributes to the vibrant and dynamic nature of the continent, not only in terms of art, music, and traditions but also in the way people relate to each other and their environment. This cultural diversity has had both positive and negative impacts on Africa's development. On the positive side, Africa's cultural heritage has been a source of resilience and strength for its people. Traditional knowledge and practices, passed down through generations, have enabled communities to adapt and thrive in challenging environments. Furthermore, African art, music, and literature have not only enriched the world's cultural tapestry but have also provided economic opportunities for many on the continent. However, Africa's development has also been hindered by certain aspects of its cultural history. For instance, colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade disrupted traditional African social structures and economies, leaving a long-lasting impact. Additionally, some cultural practices, such as gender-based discrimination and harmful traditional rituals, have posed significant barriers to the continent's development. In contemporary times, there is a growing recognition of the importance of preserving and promoting African cultures for sustainable development. Many African countries are investing in cultural institutions, festivals, and events that celebrate and showcase their heritage. Furthermore, the global appreciation of African music, fashion, and art has created new economic opportunities and platforms for African artists and creators. In the realm of development, there is a growing recognition of the need to integrate traditional knowledge and practices into policies and strategies. Efforts are being made to leverage indigenous knowledge in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, and environmental conservation. By recognizing and harnessing the strengths of Africa's cultural diversity, there is potential for more inclusive and sustainable development on the continent. In conclusion, Africa's cultural heritage has both shaped and been shaped by its development trajectory. Pacific American Heritage Month honors the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the nation. A Glimpse into History: This observance originated in 1978 when Congress passed a resolution to celebrate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. This timing was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, largely built by Chinese immigrants. In 1992, the observance was expanded to a month-long celebration.
