In Alberta, local political parties are coming to a big city near you. This is an essential step toward a discourse that is less precious and more deliberate. One where the facts of building a city are more important than name recognition, ethereal ideas, superficial sound bites, unbridled bureaucracy, and righteous politics. Edmonton can be a city where predictability is not a matter of chance or covert effort. We can have a city hall where a lack of progress cannot be explained away flippantly. We can all be a part of a community that shares a succinct vision. I believe we are heading into a no-nonsense phase of local politics that will address what plagues our city. We need to become laser focused on the handful of things that will make our city great. We have done a poor job for too long and it is about time we get real about the world around us and make necessary changes. I am involved in www.tapyeg.ca because I care about Edmonton and am excited by the simple prospect of real courage forcing tangible change. We can do big things but not with yesterday’s thinking and surely not with yesterday’s politics. It is no longer going to be good enough to present a motion that commissions a report, to prepare a glossy brochure or make a speech that is self-fulfilling, or to share an anecdote on social media with no basis because the graphics look nice. The organization and effective operation of local political parties will provide a layer of accountability that has been absent but deserved by Edmontonians. With parties firmly in place we can stop talking about building a city. We can get on with it. Gone are the days knocking on doors seeking input on what makes people mad. Welcome to the era of knocking on doors and sharing ideas that bring us together. The chess board of politics is changing in Alberta’s big cities. You can love it or you can hate it. You can also get involved and make it matter to you and your neighbours.

How can the provinces possibly agree to these 5 priorities? Is PEI the same as Ontario - NO. Is Vancouver (city) the same as Greenwood (town) - NO. Therefore, how is it reasonable for the Federal government to think the provinces will agree. Remembering 9 months ago, the Prime Minister told the country 'housing is not a federal issue'. This isn't a solution; this is about POWER, CONTROL, and POLITICS. #commercialmortgages #commercialrealestate #CRE #passiveincomeinvesting #realestateinvestor #dividendinvesting #politics #power #control

I often see strategic plans that are not guiding the financial plan. You accomplish what is funded. If you are not using the strategic plan to guide your long-range financial plan you may need to revisit the strategy. In the article below by Andrew Kleine he lays out key components in strategic plan development.
Not a single one of the 10 largest cities and counties have a link to a strategic plan on its homepage. Only two of the largest cities have a strategic plan at all, at least that I could find. Where have all the strategic plans gone? Have they disappeared because they don't work? How can local governments develop strategic plans that are actually strategic and impactful. I take on these questions in my latest American Society for Public Administration #patimes column. https://lnkd.in/d3zrTdZA

How can we give greater power to regions to address the needs and priorities of our communities? 🌍 In England, UK, the role and influence of metro mayors is growing. Strong local roots and an understanding of specific regional challenges and opportunities, make them ideal intermediaries between citizens and central government to help develop policies to tackle key issues. Kerry Scott, our global leader for #environment and society, explores the transformative influence they can have once the trust and support of the electorate is earned. 👇 https://mottm.ac/3Y1twtU #SocialValue #LocalGovernment #MetroMayors

Serious debate about economic growth is quashed at national and state levels (so far). But not at the county level! Thus, the KEEP Our Counties Great campaign. Follow along as Dave Rollo, CASSE Policy Specialist, describes the unique opportunities (and challenges) of moving toward a steady-state county. https://lnkd.in/eMxfNN7E
