Excited for this hire is an understatement! We set out for this role a few months ago and spent a lot of time carving out the need, being intentional about the right fit, and making sure our job description was transparent and accurate. We posted the job on LinkedIn and our website. We received 61 applicants in total who met the preliminary qualifications. Each applicant was sent a link to the Culture Index survey. Out of those 61, 5 applicants made it to the first round of interviews based on their CI results. This isn’t because we didn’t want to talk to everyone, but because we have a specific process that we use for hiring people. Why get to know people who aren’t the right fit for a role and then try to justify continuing the interview process when they aren’t the right fit? I knew when I met Lauryn Roll (Patton) that she was the one, but tried to keep an open mind. We interviewed all 5 candidates two additional times. Gave them some scenarios to work through and let them walk us through their process. It was awesome to see them all do it! But when Lauryn showed up with a presentation that was not only a great visual but matched our brand, I KNEW we had to hire her. We let her and 1 other candidate interview with the team members that would report to them. Culture fit is crucial to our success. Everyone that interviewed with Lauryn felt the same way we did. And Lauryn felt the same way about us. I’m so excited she is on our team and cannot wait to see what she brings to the table in action. This is gonna be fun! Oh, and David Foster created a video presentation that we sent out with the email to the other 4 candidates that we did not hire. They all spoke about how much they appreciated not only getting a rejection email, but a video to go along with it made them feel seen. The hiring process can be daunting and extensive, but if you remain true to your core values and are intentional with every aspect, it will pay off every time.

I have been sitting with the same thoughts that Michael shared so perfectly. So many people gave me the same warnings of what working at MMA would be like, yet none of them actually worked there. I have heard them tell their clients the same negative things. I stand beside Michael and I am so glad I didn't listen to what they said either. When my son got married a few weeks after starting at MMA, it was encouraged and expected that I be fully present in my personal life during that time. I have a leader that needed to cut a meeting short to pick up his sick child from school, and I was so grateful that he showed that having a family and being successful in business are attainable. No shame in having a family that needs your care. The conversations about people are positive behind closed doors, there's no time wasted on unproductive negative talk. Creating a culture of trust and true communication. Our leaders will stand in front of a room full of colleagues and ask for questions, and they TRULY want you to ask any question. There are no black lists created for speaking up. Everyone is kind and thoughtful, I felt welcomed and included from day one. A true seat at the table. There is an old saying "Never judge a book by its cover." When I left a family office for a global insurance agency, I heard the gamut of reasons why it was a bad decision, mostly about culture. The idea that where I was headed was "cutthroat," "impersonal," that I would be a small peon in a giant ecosystem, and would get lost. Had I listened to such talk, I would have missed out on a truly awesome opportunity. Here's what has transpired instead: Every day, colleagues drop by my office to say hello and learn about me and my family (including our CEO). I sit around at lunch and talk books with a group that loves to read (and has created an internal library). The office gathers weekly for breakfasts and lunches, and monthly to celebrate birthdays and professional accomplishments. I've attended pizza parties, ice cream socials, and coming soon a Michigan-Michigan State tailgate. I haven't met a single cutthroat. Instead, every person I've met has gone out of their way to help me to be the best I can be. And most importantly, there is a genuine commitment to our clients, to providing them expert counsel and solutions, and to answer every question, show up where and when they need us. My wife has long worked for a Fortune 500 Company (she just celebrated 15 years) and now I do too, but here's the thing they don't tell you: there is a REASON why they're a Fortune 500 that has nothing, and everything, to do with the bottom line. They don't get that good by stepping on their people. They get that good because they value their people. I have felt incredibly valued since Day 1 at Marsh McLennan Agency, and I am excited for my future here.
