Below is my latest article published with Tina Salzman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on School Leadership. A fifty question survey was given to teachers in 25 high performing affluent schools and 25 high performing low socio economic schools. The study found that within this sample: 1) Effective school leadership is more vital in low socio economic schools then it is in affluent schools. 2) Engaging in instructionally focused interactions with teachers effectively was the greatest attribute among leaders in all 50 schools that contributed to their schools success. 3) The leaders ability to build a productive school climate was significantly more important in low socio economic schools than in affluent schools for positive student outcomes.

Trust and school leaders- Let’s drop all the labels….. In order to cultivate a more inclusive and effective educational environment, it is imperative that we embrace a new paradigm in school leadership. By refraining from categorising children with labels such as PP, disadvantaged, SEND, and instead focusing on individual needs, we can tailor our pedagogical approaches to benefit all students. This shift will not only foster a more equitable and supportive learning experience for every child, but also enhance overall academic achievement and personal growth. Embracing a mindset that prioritises adaptation and inclusivity for all students is crucial in shaping a more holistic and successful educational system.

As educators, we must live our teachings. Maya Angelou said, “If you teach, you have to live your teaching. You can’t say ‘you do not as I do, but do as I say.’ You know what’s right, just do right. You really don’t have to ask anybody, the truth is right may not be expedient, it may not be profitable, but it will satisfy your soul.” This resonates deeply with me as I work with high school students from diverse backgrounds. I strive to model respect, empathy, and honesty, treat all students equitably, and foster critical thinking.
