Methane is over 25 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere over a 100-year period. • Short-Term Impact: Over a 20-year period, methane is approximately 84 times more potent than CO₂. Climate Change Acceleration: • Temperature Rise: Increased methane emissions contribute to the acceleration of global temperature rise. • Extreme Weather: The warming effect can lead to more frequent and severe weather events, such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves. • Habitat Disruption: Climate change can disrupt ecosystems, affecting plant and animal species and potentially leading to loss of biodiversity. • Ocean Acidification: Increased CO₂ from associated processes can lead to ocean acidification, affecting marine life. Human Health: • Air Quality: Methane emissions can contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, which can cause respiratory problems and other health issues. • Heat-Related Illnesses: Rising temperatures can increase the incidence of heat-related illnesses and deaths.
"We are facing a methane emergency. There are plenty of loopholes in the regulations requiring oil and gas producers to eliminate methane emissions." An analysis of the industry's own data reveals that only 6% of the methane gas released into our atmosphere comes from actual leaks, with the remainder coming from intentional releases. Therefore, it is more accurate to refer to these as "methane gas releases." While the industry prefers the term "leaks," the facts indicate that most methane pollution from the U.S. oil and gas sector is due to intentional venting and flaring, which are standard practices in oil field operations rather than accidents. Hydraulic fracturing (more commonly known as fracking) may have become popular in the early 2000s, but the practice actually traces its roots back to before the American Civil War. More than 150 years later, the fracking boom is alive and well and accounts for 79 percent of all natural gas produced in the U.S., to the detriment of the environment, public health, and efforts to reduce methane emissions. One of the most impactful ways states can address fracking is through environmental analyses, moratoriums, or full statewide bans. In this article for our Dashboard Digest series, we dive deeper into what fracking is, what are its risks, and how states can take action. Read the article:
