Recently, I had the opportunity to be part of mediation team during a machinery site visit in Jakarta, where 3 buyer teams converged to negotiate the purchase of used wood machinery. This experience provided valuable insights into effective negotiation strategies. Key Insights on Negotiation: 1. Understanding Diverse Perspectives: Engaging with multiple buyer teams underscored the importance of understanding diverse perspectives and aligning interests to facilitate mutually beneficial agreements. 2. Building Trust and Rapport: Establishing trust and rapport proved crucial in fostering open communication and creating a conducive environment for constructive negotiations. 3. Adaptability and Flexibility: Flexibility in approach and adaptability to changing dynamics allowed for nimble adjustments during negotiations, ensuring progress towards successful outcomes. 4. Clear Communication and Clarity of Terms: Emphasizing clear communication and outlining terms comprehensively helped mitigate misunderstandings and streamline negotiation processes. 5. Commitment to Fairness and Integrity: Upholding principles of fairness and integrity throughout negotiations reinforced credibility and contributed to sustainable business relationships. This experience has reinforced my commitment to mastering the art of negotiation while upholding professional standards and achieving positive outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

As a legal person in the media industry, one of my main responsibilities is to manage and monitor the legality of collaborations and events. This time, an unusual request came from our production team. The first time I contributed directly to the field as a master of ceremony for the 2024 Jakarta Fair. Gladly, the event ran smoothly & everyone was satisfied. However, in this post, I really want to discuss the other side of the legal profession. Should a legal person always be serious and unemotional❓It seems that some still hold onto this misconception. But the fact is that every legal person has their own emotional intelligence and personality. I believe that having a sense of humour and passion for things you like, such as one of my passions is public speaking, can be an asset in the legal field. This quality has always helped me become a more effective communicator, able to show genuine emotions so as to provide a comfortable environment and establish professional trust relationships with clients and/or colleagues. It doesn't mean that a serious and calm attitude is not necessary. But complemented by being authentic and true to yourself, your unique personality can help you stand out in this field that sometimes feels very formal and rigid. Thus, you will ultimately fall in love with your own legal profession and be treated with kindness & respect.🌟🌟 #legalperson #legalcareer #legalprofession

3.10.2024 - With less than 2 weeks to officially complete my pupillage, I have decided not to go into practice. I have always known that practice, especially litigation, is not my cup of tea. I prefer to be attached to a company's legal department, M&C, or something similar. In short, I prefer to be an in-house counsel or legal counsel. Of course, being an in-house counsel means missing out on all the drama associated with litigation and practice. However, I am better suited to taking my knowledge and experience to a job scope in which I have an interest. Many people have enquired about the reason for not going into practice and most wondered if I ended up in a toxic firm. I have zero complaints nor do I have any negative remarks about Messrs Amrit & Company. It is an ideal firm for those who desire to be a litigator. I am confident that I have made the right decision in not venturing into practice. Alas, the job search begins once again. I am seeking employment within Kuala Lumpur as a junior legal counsel, a junior in-house lawyer, a junior corporate advisor or a similar. I would be very appreciative if one of my connections could point out any such role. #openforwork

Fun fact: This list published by Dato' Azmi Mohd Ali came from my article, the History of the Kuala Lumpur Bar which I wrote for Kuala Lumpur Bar and published by INSAF (Malaysian Bar's journal). I found it at the National Archives together with many other interesting documents regarding our legal profession from the late 1800s up to post World World 2. I will share them when I have free time. The full article can be read here - https://lnkd.in/gfZwwZ7C.
Interesting piece of history - the listing of advocates & solicitors practising in Federated Malay States, 31st December, 1931. The list contained the names of Yong Shook Lin, A.W. Delamore, E.D. Shearn and W.V.D Skrine, they started the firms that continue to exist till today, in modern Malaysia, Shearn & Delamore, Skrine and Shook Lin & Bok. The most senior non white and non European lawyer was H.H. Abdul Cader. There were also J.G.Cambell, and B. Madge, it triggered my curiosity if Jalan Campbell [Campbell Road] and Jalan Madge [Madge Road] were roads in Kuala Lumpur named after them. There was only one Malay lawyer then, Haji Abdul Wahab Abdel Aziz (later known as Dato Wahab Panglima Bukit Gantang) who later served as Menteri Besar of Perak. 93 years later, there are roughly 23,000 lawyers in Peninisular Malaysia (excluding lawyers who are practising in Sabah & Sarawak). *Note: The listing was uncovered from Malaysia’s National Archives by Foong Cheng Leong, a practising lawyer when he was researching into the history of lawyers in Kuala Lumpur.

Stop calling MoU as agreements. MoU and agreements are two different things. Check this out😉
Regards, Reza Aldo Agusta
