Darn, this fashion industry is #complex and #toxic. But also fascinating, right? This presentation reminds me of my own attempt to combine two "stories" of supply networks: "I, Pencil" by Leonard Read (https://lnkd.in/gSK2FN_Q) and "PIG 05049" by Christien Meindertsma (https://lnkd.in/geMmm28r). Of course totally beside the point, but where would the pencil, the pig and the dress meet?
Part 1: The fashion problem… Can you see the shaking as I tell #TheStoryOfADress? Where all of our #garments come from, and the harm it causes to people and the planet... I have learned so much by watching TEDx speakers, and so it made me shake with excitement to be one. Have you ever wondered how many countries a garment visits before it gets to you? How many underpaid pairs of hands might have worked on it, and how many pieces of plastic were used to wrap it? Here is a clip that might help to enlighten us all. We need to know, it’s only fair. Really concisely explained here: why is fast fashion a problem? I'm not going to suggest you should never buy fast fashion: sometimes that's just what you can afford. I'm not going to suggest you should never buy imported clothing: although the conditions can be terrible, it's a major source of employment around the world - choose options made in vetted and audited factories wherever you can. What I AM going to suggest is...maybe you and I have enough clothes, if you're reading this from the Global North, especially? Maybe you need fewer new pieces than you think. Maybe you can find something secondhand that will work for you. Maybe you can find that piece you need from a slow/ethical fashion brand. What's the next step you'll take?

Ever paused to ponder the journey behind that trendy outfit hanging in your closet? 👗 👕 Fashion, especially "fast fashion" isn't just about trends —it comes with complex challenges that impact our world profoundly. The industry's rapid production and turnover not only harm our environment but also pose serious human rights concerns. Consumer awareness, industry accountability, and sustainable practices are key to tackling issues in the garments industry. It's also great to see the rise of a growing movement advocating for ethical production standards, fair wages, and responsible consumption. ♻ #fashion #ethicalbusiness #ethicalfashion #garments #climateaction

This September we’ve been supporting Second Hand September and taking a stance against the impact of fast fashion by shopping and wearing second hand. By recirculating our clothes, we can help reduce demand for fashion which has become one of the most polluting industries on the planet. If you want to take part, Oxfam have lots of tips on how to buy, wear and donate second hand. Amazing how destructive can the story of ONE DRESS be. Please let's make using second-hand fashionable again. And then, let's do this same exercise for buildings. #circulareconomy #circulardesign

#thestoryofthedress This is why we need to think beyond carbon emissions, and net zero. Overconsumption drives the fashion industry, and the human exploitation which comes hand in hand with the incessant production of cheaply made clothing to feed our need to have the latest fashionable item. It comes at a cost, not just to the climate, but to people, often woman and children. And while the counter argument is that they have gainful employment where there are so few other opportunities, often they are paid far less than the living wage so that we can buy a t-shirt for £5 in Primark. So much more to do to raise awareness and to remind ourselves every time we want something to ask ourselves if we really need it, or can we buy it second-hand, or even rent it. #conciousness #consiousconsumer #slowfashion #reuse #secondhand #fashionrevolution

Marketing and Communications at Enviu, India | Branding, Marketing & Communications Designer | Sustainable Fashion Practitioner | Threading Change Coordinator
A compelling narrative by Arizona Muse that urges us to see beyond the fabric and "Made In" labels. The journey of a garment extends far beyond its exterior, weaving a complex tale of diverse manufacturing processes across various countries. Each component, just like any machine, is manufactured and assembeled in different places before reaching to the retailer. This revelation is not just enlightening; it serves as a wake-up call. The interconnected global web of fashion production demands our attention and action. The future may be daunting if we remain passive observers. #fashionawareness #supplychain #consciousconsumption #fashionsupplychain
