In this episode, Jim Gould, PhD and I focus on the importance of being involved in your community outside of your research activities. This involvement can increase connections and enable you to develop soft and sometimes hard skills outside of your research. These activities could also increase diversity and inclusion depending upon which organizations you are involved with. We thought this would be timely given the focus on diversity in June and also the importance of contributing positively to your respective community. We will share a few of our involvements as well as highlight a few that we have seen recently in resumes covering these points below and more. Jim has emphasized a few times during the podcast series that we are all human beings doing human things and involvement is a great way to show this! We hope you enjoy listening!    - Engagement in your community is important - You gain skills and experiences through involvement in your respective community that help you build skills outside of your day to day work - You can be energized by these; therefore you may be less likely to burn out - Sometimes these activities can enrich and inform your “day job” - You can increase your network and perspectives - You can gain leadership and management skills - You may learn something new - Ask yourself why do you want to do something and how can I go about doing this, and what you can draw from the experience to help you plan your engagement - Seeing this on a candidate’s CV or resume is often seen as a positive - Jim and I talk about a few examples that we have seen to help the audience with perspective here such as o  Involvement in local chapters of national organizations. o  Involvement in specific groups at universities o  Founding an organization to serve a need that you see o  Involvement in community wide organizations - It is important to draw parallels to the skills you are gaining through involvement and how these can impact your “day to day” work

Podcasts are prime for zagging everyone else's zigging. BUT, being different is one of those easier said than done prescriptions so let's start there: Given the opportunity to start a podcast again, I'd take the biggest pain point from my previous experiences to shape my next show. Industry education interview podcasts are the easiest to get approved, to format, and guests often bring their own topics/the expertise, HOWEVER... If you do a weekly show, that means you'll need 52 guests from your industry give or take a few episodes done completely in-house. I'm going to guess you're not close with 52 marketing people you feel comfortable handing the microphone too unchecked. And if you do, that's only doing one year of the show. Do you know 104? How many of those people are the ones your audience already sees on every podcast because they're the industry creators with the most eyeballs? Instead of micro-level "industry education," I'd move to broader resonant frustration topics and I'd axe needing a guest for every interview. What might this look like as an example? If I'm in recruitment, HR software or I'm in employee advocacy, than I'd love to try a show all about how much work sucks, people getting screwed by workplaces, salary and housing cost disconnects, examples of people, cities, and countries designing more modern working conditions and places, even the options for organizing and building companies around employees. Think of something like Adam Grant's Work Life podcast. For marketing, I'd create a show about marketing leadership horror stories, startup catastrophes, unicorns that imploded, marketing campaigns you wouldn't believe worked, current viral campaigns that are causing drama nationally or internationally, brain trusts for how to game every KPI, griftiest social post of the week nominations, etc. It's more journalistic, but the potential upside is much larger than "let's talk about day-to-day tasks and challenges with people who give vague explanations for how their company allegedly solved the unsolvable at their workplace. Snooze. You want the topics and your influence to have the potential to grow in such a way that people listen to you during commutes, doing home tasks, etc. And we want people to aggressively yell, "That's what I've been f-ing saying this whole time" as they sit next to, now nervous, strangers on the bus.
