"OPPORTUNITY WINDOW" - how can you win potential distributor's attention during your first meeting? Part of my job - to get the meeting time with good quality trusted importer/distributor to present one or another opportunity (brand). And despite I have also a good personal relation with them in most cases, people value when you come prepared and showing that you know what you do or at least what you want; especially in new not well-known markets for the brand. In stead of coming only with "exceptional unique product" and pricing. (i) Have clear brand proposition and how it translates into potential sales opportunity. Distributors usually don't want another brand or product. They need solutions to their problems or help penetrating new opportunities (ii) So, present yourself & brand in a way helping distributor solve his challenges (iii) Show you're investing your time in knowing the market specifics, competitive environment, trends. Audio visual trade distributor Midwich Group plc saw its share price fall despite forecasting that it expected to defy broader market challenges with a renewed surge of growth. A pre-close first-half trading statement reveals a story of robust revenue, gross margin & market share performance driven by a continued focus on value-added technical solutions, despite challenging market conditions. The Board's expectations of adjusted operating profit for the full year remain in line with previous expectations. Revenue for H1 2024 (to June 30) is expected to be around £645 million, representing an increase of over 5.7 per cent year-on-year. Organic revenue on a constant currency basis reduced by 1.1 per cent versus H1 2023. This reflected the continued challenging market conditions, particularly in the UK & Ireland, as detailed in the group's AGM statement on May 14. Midwich said that mainstream product categories had been particularly impacted, it believes due to some over-supply of products resulting in short-term price erosion this year. The group still delivered a record gross margin of approximately 17.3 per cent, which was significantly higher than the 16.3 per cent achieved in H1 2023. It says the main factor for this strong growth was the mix of sales, which was weighted towards higher margin technical products, in line with the group's strategy. Overheads increased as expected during the period, due to acquisitions completed in H2 2023, and labour cost inflation, which Midwich says is now showing signs of easing. Trading remained strong in North America with sales up by some 69 per cent on a constant currency basis, including the impact of acquisitions completed in the last 12 months. Managing director Stephen Fenby says: “The group has continued to navigate challenging trading conditions in the first half of 2024, particularly in the UK & Ireland, and has delivered a solid result despite this backdrop. “Midwich remains well positioned as the leading global specialist Pro AV distributor, with the group's £1.3 billion revenue in 2023 representing less than one per cent of the global market and just 3-4 per cent of our target addressable market. Over the coming years, we anticipate there being significant opportunities to continue growing faster than the overall market, both organically and through acquisition and the board remains excited by the long-term prospects for the group.” Full article – https://lnkd.in/eyjJSXu5

10:00 Thursday 18, 2024 Legal Business Philip Morris suspends nationwide sales on Zyn.com after D.C. subpoena June 18, 20241:04 AM GMT+2Updated 9 hours ago June 17 - Tobacco giant Philip Morris International (PM.N), opens new tab said on Monday that it would suspend online sales on Swedish Match North America's ZYN.com nationwide as the Zyn nicotine pouch maker responds to a subpoena from the District of Columbia (D.C.). Philip Morris bought Swedish Match in a $16 billion deal in 2022 as the company looked to reduce its reliance on cigarettes amid stricter regulations, and a consumer shift towards alternatives to tobacco and traditional cigarettes. The company said that Swedish Match North America had received a subpoena from D.C.'s Attorney General requesting information about its compliance with D.C.'s 2022 ban on the sale of all flavored tobacco. In October 2022, D.C. banned, opens new tab the sale of all flavored tobacco, including flavored synthetic nicotine products. Philip Morris said that it intends to comply with D.C.'s request and that in the event of an unfavorable outcome related to this matter, a material liability is reasonably possible. The company said its preliminary investigation indicates that there have been sales of flavored nicotine pouch products in D.C., predominantly related to certain online sales platforms and some independent retailers. "Swedish Match is conducting a full review of its sales and supply chain arrangements in D.C. and other U.S. localities where flavor bans may apply and is temporarily suspending all sales on ZYN.com until that assessment is complete," a Philip Morris spokesperson told reporters. Philip Morris has benefited from strong demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches in the U.S., which the company says do not contain tobacco. In its first quarter results, reported in April, shipments of Zyn nicotine pouches grew nearly 80% compared with a year ago. However, sales on ZYN.com represent a "very small percentage of nationwide Zyn volumes," the company added on Monday. When it comes to choosing the right international distributor, most manufacturers think it’s just a case of meeting someone at a trade show or doing a bit of Googling. Unfortunately, although you can find distributors that way, the odds of a successful long-term partnership are low, because the odds of someone you find randomly having the characteristics you need are low. It’s a bit like walking into a bar and expecting to meet the love of your life - it can happen, but it’s the exception rather than the rule. Instead, when you start the search for an international distributor, think about it the way you would if you were looking for someone to spend your life with (it’s not dissimilar) and establish some key criteria. What values do you want the distributor to have? How do they operate day-to-day? What are their financials like? What are your expectations about how they will work with you and vice versa? Once you’ve got this figured out, then you can start searching for people who meet the profile, rather than hooking up with randoms.
