Exciting news from CESA member Form Energy! In collaboration with Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc., they've wrapped up a groundbreaking study on the impact of long-duration energy storage (LDES) on the California grid. The study finds that California will need at least 5 gigawatts (GW) of LDES by 2045 to meet its GHG reduction goals. The addition of 21 GW of LDES could enable California to phase out in-state gas-fired generation, all while maintaining cost parity with the core scenario. To completely break free from all gas-fired resources, both in-state and imports, would require 37 GW of LDES. Let's power the future sustainably! Fear mongerers have missed some important details about the green energy transmission. It is unlikely to be inflationary as clearly articulated by former RBA deputy governor Guy Debelle and Toby Phillips Building the green power supply is likely to cost some $625 billion. But many of our current power plants are approaching end of life and would need to be replaced anyway. So even staying with carbon based energy would cost $400 billion. And that extra $225 billion will be spent over decades and much of it will be imported anyway so have a small domestic impact. Green power has other benefits too including not being subject to global energy price shocks. And it’s green. https://lnkd.in/gAVCrabP
