Last week I announced I was on the way to a sustainability-focussed Partner Success day at Xero HQ - so what was the key insight from the Q&A? 👇 💡People often think of B Corp as a mark of being environmentally friendly, but that’s a surprisingly small aspect💡 Other areas assessed include the impact of the business and its approach to; • workers • customers • community • governance • supply chain Given the core values, attitudes towards team members and client focus, Xero partner firms are likely closer to the B Corp standard than they imagine. The key differences tend to come from 1) Mission Lock - changing the company’s Articles of Association to include explicit consideration of people and planet, not just profit in its decision making. 2) Impact Business Model - a systemically embedded impact/charity contribution (in our case 20% of profits). But It’s not about meeting the standard. It’s about the attitude, the values, the commitment to business as a force for good. It’s about the continuous drive to improve. Not an alien concept really. Loved sharing stories about the ERP-eace of mind we're seeing finance teams achieve in building incredible tech stacks so they can scale without moving to an ERP. So proud of the praise for what we're doing with CFO Techstack as the content and community hub, providing the precedent and insight for how you can scale with Xero as a larger SME. The secret is out. Xero is not just for small and micro businesses. You can do amazing things and soar to incredible heights in building a tech stack around Xero. There's a reason we're seeing more and more businesses move there from ERPs. And it's not just the cost saving, although don't get me wrong. That is HUGE. There are incredible best-of-breed solutions for the pro-finance pain points you need to supplement around Xero. Solutions that have been many years in the making. Maps play an integral role in human history. They are a lagging indicator of progress; of discovery. They chart what has been built; what has been learnt. Prior to that point there has just been instinct and a compass. At Mayday we serve in-house finance teams of multi-entity businesses that use Xero. We help mend month-end by automating intercompany charges, intercompany balance sheet recs and cross-entity bank rec. A year ago, we had an instinct. That there was a need for content, community and precedent of how it was possible to thrive with Xero as a larger SME with an in-house finance team. CFO Techstack, our content and community hub, is now 10 months old. It continues to be a privilege to tell the stories of the amazing things that finance leaders are doing in scaling with Xero and building a tech stack around it. So excited to channel what we've learned to bring you the first ever CFO Techstack app map. Everyone always wants to do the sexy stuff like "strategy" but you need to nail the basics, roll up your sleeves, do the boring work, understand the transactions and then the strategy will often be quite obvious. This is an excellent map from David Tuck of the technology and tools that help deliver, or make more efficient, the different areas of finance. They are the basics building blocks of finance. Nail them, and then nail the strategy.

Do you use Xero? Are you thinking about calculating your emissions? For the love of nature, activate your free Hubdoc subscription. Why? Activity data, activity data, activity data. If you spend $617.43 at OfficeMax, that's likely a mix of a bunch of things like: 📄 5 reams of recycled paper 🖨️ a printer ♶ 2 packs of lamination sheets 🍫 a Snickers bar The emissions related to each of those things will be different. When you're trying to reduce your emissions you're asking yourself "what are we spending money on or consuming that is resulting in the most emissions?" And you need activity data (what you actually bought, not the total invoice amount) to do that. That's what Hubdoc does, it takes your invoices and automagically 🪄 gets that activity data into Xero so you don't develop an eye tick when you finally get to calculating your emissions and try to find that activity data in each of the invoices 🫠 Not that you'd do that. But yes, save yourself and the planet. Start using Hubdoc or some other magical tool (like Dext) that'll make your life easier so you can focus on what's actually important. The alternative is knowing that you spend a lot of money at OfficeMax 😘
