We’re all set up at #CENCAN 2024 with the Minister of Mines George Pirie. Visit us at our booth located in Arena 1, R4-03.
Our MD Cameron Henry will be presenting tomorrow at 10:40am.
A US$176 billion investment opportunity is developing in the small modular reactor (SMR) market.
Since Wood Mac started tracking the SMR market in 2021, announced capacity has expanded dramatically. COP28's goal to triple nuclear capacity is one of the latest tailwinds for SMR technology: and its not just utilities that are considering SMRs, industrial offtakers are as well.
Check out our coverage on what developers are in the lead, why uranium prices have surged, and our project-by-project tracking.
In this episode on Ira’s #EverythingBagel, Ira dives into an engaging conversation with Charles J. Moxley Jr., author of “Nuclear Weapons and International Law: Existential Risks of Nuclear War and Deterrence through a Legal Lens.” 🎙️
What you’ll learn in this thought-provoking episode:
💣 The Risks of Eliminating Nuclear Weapons – What’s the cost of disarmament?
⚖️ Can Law Govern “Lawless” Nations? – Exploring accountability.
🌍 Why Following International Law Is in Everyone’s Interest.
☢️ The Legacy of MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) – Is it still relevant?
🔥 The Fallacy of Low-Yield Nuclear Weapons – Why even “small” nukes are dangerous.
🌀 Managing Irrational Leaders – Navigating unpredictability in global politics.
🌱 Harnessing the Potential for Survival – Finding hope amid existential risks.
⚠️ Nuclear Winter – What’s the real danger?
🔬 The Role of Chemical and Biological Conventions – Lessons for nuclear policy.
🎯 Misguided Policies and Proportionate Responses – How can we do better?
🌟 Why Optimism Still Matters – Progress is possible.
This episode tackles some of the most critical questions facing our world today. Can legal frameworks guide us through the complexities of nuclear policy, or are we heading toward an inevitable crisis?

Small Modular Reactors as Saskatchewan‘s source of green energy are moving closer to deployment.
Placing Saskatchewan’s first SMR at Estevan is logical as it will phase out the current coal-based electrical generation infrastructure.
This is great news for the city! To have closed the mines would have crippled the community.
What must be now considered is the middle part of the nuclear supply chain - converting the uranium feedstock obtained from Saskatchewan’s mines into the fuel used by the province’s SMRs.
Imagine - a “Net Carbon Zero” province!
The US is finally getting serious about uranium supply security
Over the last few months, a bunch of legislation has come out that could set the stage for more investment in uranium processing capacity in the US and in OECD markets.
Supply security, especially for HALEU, is an important part of attracting capital for next-generation nuclear.

Following the ADVANCE Act, check out my latest note on how US policy towards nuclear is evolving fast.
What stands out to me is expedited environmental review procedures under section 207 of the ADVANCE Act.
Big picture - this legislation shows Congress can provide clear guidance to federal agencies to streamline regulatory reviews that are key to advancing emerging energy technologies.

Thanks for sharing this article, Ryan!
The article discusses some recent large verdicts and what is making jurors react with "nuclear' verdicts.
"Juries are going “nuclear” with greater frequency, imposing outsize verdicts on U.S. companies as they seek to stand up for the little guy, according to some studies, a trend that is making some insurance policies more costly and harder to come by.
The number of cases with a corporate defendant that had a jury award of more than $10 million—what businesses and insurers call a nuclear verdict—grew more than 27% in 2023, continuing a general upward trend, according to research by Marathon Strategies, a communications and research firm."
