Funding can often be a hindrance to urban planning. Therefore, it's nice to have Bill Gates and Jeff Bezzo in Washington to make donations to local community efforts. The latest donation (from Jeff Bezzo)(not sure how much they have donated) is to the affordable housing crisis. As much as we need affordable housing, building and sustaining them requires capital. In partnership with religious centers (land) and non-profits, and developers... we can build more affordable housing.

Statistics say a lot about the challenges of home affordability in the Midwest. “1 in 9 households in Wisconsin spend half or more of their income on housing,” reported Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity in their 2023 annual report. “There is a shortage of over 126,000 affordable rentals available for extremely low-income families in Wisconsin.” To help mitigate this crisis in the community they serve, local Malarkey Certified Residential Contractor, American Quality Homes, donated their time and labor for the installation of a new roof on a new home built by Habitat for Humanity. With assistance from Northeast Wisconsin Malarkey Sales Representative Maximilian Crookston, a complete system of roofing products was donated in the fall of 2023. Did you know that you can actually get a tax deduction for donating items rather than just tossing them out? As a property owner, you could claim everything that you donate from the house to a 501(c)3 charity at its fair market value. In a Washington Post article, they determined that between 85 and 90 percent of a house is recyclable or can be repurposed by deconstructing the property. While performing a deconstruction of the property rather than a demolition, in which the property is gutted, can be expensive, the tax deductions from the donation write-offs can well exceed the cost of the deconstruction The article also talked about a homeowner who chose to deconstruct her property for $23,000 but received a tax deduction of $130,000 from the materials that she donated. That’s a huge increase in your cash flow! Please note, the items you donate must be undamaged, and some of those include: Cabinets, Lumber, Appliances, and others.
