I vividly remember my 1st day as a business development executive. In June 2015, I decided to leave my cushiony air-conditioned tech job as a Software Developer in an industry-leading MNC and join an early-stage startup as an Assistant Manager - Business Development. With no prior experience in sales and marketing [not even a soul in my family had been into this side of things ever], I had changed my profile because I thought that was the right thing for me to do. It was not a typical first day at office. I was introduced to the team, and within an hour, I was assigned a one-day mentor who would take me through the processes and the product pitch through a live-field-demo. My one-day mentor, now one of my closest friends - Hussain Bombaywala, showed me his negotiation skills within the next 2 hours (where he closed 3-4 partnerships), and then we spent the next 2 hours bonding and chilling. The day was supposedly over. However, I was not feeling it. I needed to be sure about my decision of switching my career (previously, which was doing well by all standards), and I needed the conviction to follow-through in the new one. That evening, I decided to go solo for my first (partnership) adventure. I walked into Tea Villa Cafe in Ville Parle East, Mumbai. Nervously, I asked the manager there to introduce me to the owners. As luck would have it, that was the first account I signed on the very 1st day of my new job. To tell you the truth, it wasn't me getting the job that made the switch in my career. It was that moment - gathering the courage to walk into the restaurant, and speak to a potential business partner - that was the moment of switch.
