During their Immersive Field Course in Denmark led by Professors Mike Toffel and Willy Shih, Harvard Business School students learned about Fjernvarme Fyn A/S's plans to achieve net-negative carbon emissions by replacing the coal-fired power plant with biogas and building capabilities for carbon storage. Bonnie Chen, Ryan Fuller, and Anita Wang were impressed and optimistic about the role of district heating in the fight against climate change. https://lnkd.in/e6a4aPD6 #harvardbusinessschool #climatechange #climateaction #energy #carbon #cleanenergy

SWEN’s view 🌍 The global carbon footprint is growing at alarming rates, and more decisive actions are needed to reduce it. Managing and reducing the carbon footprint is a crucial step for organizations and individuals striving for sustainability. Technologies such as renewable energy sources and energy efficiency solutions play a key role in reducing the carbon footprint. The article at the bottom of this post emphasizes the urgent need for action to reduce global carbon emissions. While efforts to decarbonize are underway, we are still not on track to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. SWEN urges individuals to accelerate their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint by investing in renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and offsetting carbon emissions: “This year promises to match or even surpass 2023, becoming the hottest year on record. Over the past three months, global temperatures have been exceptionally high – about 1.6 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels – following the peak of the current El Niño event in early 2024. New monthly temperature records have been set over the last 10 months, although the threshold for setting new records has decreased from around 0.3°C last year to 0.1°C in the first three months of 2024.” SWEN is committed to leading the charge in preventing further environmental degradation and mitigating the impacts of climate change. By advocating for sustainable practices, investing in renewable energy solutions, and promoting carbon offsetting initiatives, SWEN aims to inspire others to take meaningful action towards a more sustainable future for our planet. Together, we can make a difference and create a more environmentally conscious world for generations to come. https://lnkd.in/eR_g6Kcn #SWEN #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy #SustainabilityGoals

We welcome the Climate Change Authority's recent advice to the Federal Government, which underscores the importance of place-based strategies crucial for regions like Gladstone, Hunter Valley, and Kwinana, where energy-intensive industries ⚡🏭 anchor the economy. The sectoral plans provide a pathway for decarbonising heavy industries, with clear parameters on the policies and investment needed to rapidly reduce emissions and power clean manufacturing. 📚 Many important recommendations from our research and government submissions are reflected in CCA’s report, which includes insights from our Export Powerhouse (https://lnkd.in/gh6TFc5j), National Supergrid (https://lnkd.in/g-pCeU7E), Renewable Energy Industrial Precincts (https://lnkd.in/gBZTAWBk) and cleantech supply chains work (https://lnkd.in/gz4ZqxJi). These include strengthening the Capacity Investment Scheme via legislation and expanded funding, stronger regulations in the built environment sector and the need to establish essential energy generation and infrastructure to future-proof our national grid. Transitioning 53 towns and cities in North America to 100% WWS for all energy purposes has the potential to (1) avoid ∼9750 (2900–18,200) premature air-pollution mortalities/yr today and 7000 (1700–16,000)/yr in 2050, which along with non-mortality impacts, avoids ∼$93.2 ($12.9-$374) billion/yr in 2050 air-pollution damage costs (2015 USD); (2) avoid ∼$393 (221–836) billion/yr in 2050 global warming costs (2015 USD); (3) avoid a total health plus climate cost of ∼16.3 (7.8–40.7) ¢/kWh-BAU-all-energy, or $6,600/yr per person, over 53 towns and cities; (4) save ∼$133/person/yr in BAU-electricity-sector fuel costs; (5) create ∼93,000 more new long-term, full-time jobs than lost; (6) stabilize energy prices; and (7) use minimal new land. While social and political barriers exist, converting to 100% WWS using existing technologies appears technically and economically feasible. Reference: Jacobson, M. Z., Cameron, M. A., Hennessy, E. "Without a doubt, we need to act urgently. The CCC’s report notes that almost all indicators of progress are off track. Yet, it also shares BEAMA’s optimism that decisive steps now can lead to achieving Net Zero goals. That would also mean securing the industrial benefits and seizing the opportunity for the UK to become a global manufacturing powerhouse. The key electrification products we need are already on the UK market, so with a clear government strategy and collaboration with industry, a successful Net Zero transition is there for the taking." BEAMA CEO Yselkla Farmer's comment on the Climate Change Committee’s latest report and why consistent government policy must underpin progress. In this article, Tim Rook , our Chief Markets Officer emphasises the pivotal role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in combating climate change. Tim discusses the bystander effect, where businesses may hesitate to take action, assuming others will intervene, leading to collective inaction. SMEs are urged to overcome self-reassurance and actively reduce carbon emissions, with the UK Business Climate Hub providing guidance on renewable energy solutions, such as air source heat pumps, aligning with the Net Zero 2050 goal. There are several business benefits of adopting sustainable practices, including enhanced reputation, reduced energy costs, attractiveness to investors, and process stability.
