🌿 This weekend, I had the privilege of being part of #GreenFest, the largest sustainability event in Portugal, held at #UniversidadedoMinho in Braga. One aspect that stood out compared to similar events in Latin America was its holistic approach—engaging companies, public sector, entrepreneurs, foundations, students, families, and including activities for both children and adults. My key Takeaways: 🌱 Sustainability starts with us, and it applies just as much to companies. The conversations around minimalist living and consuming what's essential—shared by Ana Milhazes and Marta Santos Silva—serve as a reminder for businesses to adopt leaner, more conscious operations. 🚲 Balancing sustainability and profitability: In his talk, Rodrigo de Alvarenga touched on the crucial role of innovation in striking this balance. Leveraging sustainability as a driver for innovation not only helps companies do good, but also creates resilient, future-proof business models. 🤝 Collaboration and Partnerships: The example shared by Marta Bastos dos Santos on the power of volunteering highlights how businesses can partner with communities and create value that goes beyond profit. 📊 Real-world corporate transitions: Inspiring projects such as #Fibrenamics’ Recycled Reef and CITEVE´s #Be@t - Bioeconomy at Textiles underscore the importance of research, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration in driving real change. Finally, a massive thank you to Pedro Norton de Matos for trusting me, and the fantastic GreenFest team—J Mendes, Ana Cláudia Silva, Andreia Dantas, and all the wonderful volunteers like Maria Luís Miranda. Meeting so many dedicated individuals working towards a better world was truly inspiring! 💚🌍 #GreenFest #Sustainability #Inspiration

"What role should business play in building a sustainable future?" Last week, I had the opportunity to explore this question on stage at GTF Connect Singapore, sharing insights and strategies on sustainability in business with an incredible panel. Joining me were sustainability leaders from different parts of the ecosystem, Esther Chang, Executive Director of United Nations Global Compact, Singapore; Sarah Cragg, Head of APAC The Earthshot Prize; and Kitty Bu, Vice President of Southeast Asia, The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Each brought unique perspectives, sparking a lively conversation on what business can do—and must do—to drive global sustainability forward. In front of a packed room, we tackled some challenging questions: How can businesses lead the way in creating a planet-conscious economy? What is the importance of partnerships and collaboration in solving the climate crisis? And crucially, how can companies align profit with purpose without sacrificing growth? It was clear that the role of business in tackling sustainability is no longer a “nice to have” but a must. Businesses that embrace this responsibility aren’t just supporting the planet—they’re also positioning themselves as leaders, paving the way for new opportunities and stronger consumer trust. Huge thank you to Dale Rickert and Shaleena Peiris and the whole team from GREENTECH FESTIVAL for the invite—it was inspiring to see so many passionate minds committed to change. Already looking forward to the event next year. Where do you see the biggest opportunities for business to impact sustainability? Drop your thoughts below. How to make an impact in times when sustainability loses focus? 🌍 The challenge: Unfortunately, ongoing global conflicts have shifted the focus away from #sustainability in many areas, leading to a less optimistic outlook. According to Prof. Dirk Messner, 40% of Germans consider themselves economic losers of the climate transformation, despite generally supporting it. This makes it challenging to engage people effectively. In other words: We don’t have a competence or resource problem to solve the climate crisis, but we have an implementation problem. 🔍 To address these questions and challenges, Anatole von Tippelskirch and our colleagues Chiara Schneider and Dr. Jannis Andrae from SIGNAL IDUNA attended the #ImpactFestival in Frankfurt last week. The festival is recognized as Europe’s largest B2B event for sustainable innovations, bringing together a diverse mix of representatives from politics, venture capital, corporates, startups, and NGOs. Impact Festival covers a wide range of topics, including #mobility, urban living, #logistics, sustainable #finance, impact investing, #agriculture, #biodiversity, circular economy, clean #energy, water management, and organizational sustainability. The ultimate goal: foster collaboration and the exchange of ideas to accelerate sustainable transformation. 🏆 Our Personal Highlight: The SIGNAL IDUNA Gruppe Startup Challenge, which focused on quantifying client CO2 emissions and developing advisory concepts to minimize these emissions. The winner of the challenge, Circonomit, not only convinced our colleagues at SIGNAL IDUNA but also impressed the audience, earning the title of “Most Impactful Solution”. Circonomit's scalable SaaS solution helps companies build comprehensive environmental inventories, including materials, water, energy, waste and emissions. Congratulations to Chris Hahn and the Circonomit team, and a big thank you to TechQuartier for organizing the challenge! To close the circle: We met so many people and inspiring ideas at the festival that we remain optimistic and believe it is still possible (and, above all, necessary) to make an impact in terms of sustainability.

Save the date : GreenTech Forum Brussels, the new Tech & Sustainability event - 18-19 June 2024 According to the Digi4Climate study published in 2022 by Agoria, the net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions thanks to IT for Green could be 4.7 times greater than the total footprint of digital technologies themselves. Nevertheless, digital equipment generates ever growing environmental impacts and the digitisation of our societies results in a digital divide that must be addressed. In this context, GreenTech Forum Brussels is the new professional event dedicated to Tech and Sustainability. It will bring together in Brussels nearly 750 participants committed to Green IT and IT for Green. Placed under the patronage of Planet Tech'Care and co-organised by the Belgian Institute for Sustainable IT, Numeum, and SustAIn.brussels, GreenTech Forum Brussels is a unique event in Belgium. It will allow all technology and sustainability stakeholders to meet, discuss issues, share their expertise and draw up perspectives, to continue the deployment of GreenIT and IT for Green. Organized around a program of 20 conferences, 15 workshops and an exhibition and networking area, the event addresses all functions concerned by technology and sustainability within private and public organizations (IT, CSR, Purchasing, Innovation, Marketing and Communication, Legal, etc.).
