Morris Square in Charleston is a prime example of how small-scale developers can successfully implement New Urbanism. I love an old building! Over the years, I've had the privilege of working on some truly remarkable ones, including listed properties. Building conservation and rejuvenation play a crucial role in safeguarding our architectural heritage.  They ensure that both current and future generations can continue to cherish these magnificent examples of 'old school' architectural design and construction techniques – something we're unlikely to witness again!   Equally important, if not more so (some might argue), is the preservation and repurposing of existing building stock in our ongoing battle against climate change. Climate change stands as one of the most pressing challenges of our time, evident by the devastating events in continental Europe this summer.  In April 2019, the world declared a global climate emergency, and consequently, the UK committed to achieving 'Net Zero' emissions by 2050 (Scotland by 2045).   For the construction industry, achieving net zero carbon emissions poses a formidable challenge.  The buildings we inhabit are attributable to a significant portion of global energy related greenhouse gas emissions (this includes the full life cycle – construction, in use and decommissioning/demolition).  This brings me back to my initial point: constructing something new isn't always the most environmentally responsible choice.  Adapting and retrofitting existing structures can often result in a lower carbon footprint than demolishing and starting from scratch as the embodied carbon associated with constructing a typical new building can equal 20 years' worth of its operational carbon emissions!   So, here's my plea: whenever it's feasible, consider the option of preserving and repurposing existing buildings.  Not only does it protect and honour our architectural heritage, but it also contributes to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future. Seems like the ideas should apply to the infrastructure and buildings created for SEQ in the Olympic lead-in. “The outsides of these buildings are the backdrops of our lives. They are the walls of society’s public living rooms. They are our commons. But, astonishingly, this aspect of architecture is almost entirely unmeasured. And, as many business leaders argue, you can’t change what you can’t measure. In reality, there is almost no data about the impact of building design on the passers-by. On the people who walk past the things that we create, week after week, year after year. Clients don’t ask for it. Critics barely comment on it. Let’s be honest, we don’t know how most of our real customers feel.” #urbanism
