THIS is what our project budget looks like... I've never had such sympathy for arts fundraisers in my LIFE. For the Venus & The Vixens Kickstarter (you can find it, if I link it I'm sure they'll come after me) we're working our bloody TAILS off to raise $60,000 from friends and supporters for bold new musical theater production, in support of our local performing arts community and the regional Creative Economy. WIth this funding model, we have 8 days to raise the remaining $15K from Kickstarter, or we don't get ANY of it. And the Kickstarter will cover just 20% of the production budget. What are we DOING in this country?? The US dedicates .13% of GDP to supporting the arts, of all types. Finland commits 20x that amount, and guess what, they're the Happiest Country in the World five years running! Germany supports the arts 15x more than us, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada, Ireland - they ALL fund the arts at massively higher levels. So we're left to individual donors (thank HEAVENS for them), to Fiscal Sponsors like Shunpike, and to crowdsourcing platforms like Kickstarter. And to spending literally half our time scrambling to raise funds for a community-enhancing project that, like ALL THE ARTS, should be seen as vital to our collective well-being, and health as a society. More than 250,000 tents are abandoned at UK music festivals each year. A typical four-person tent can use as much plastic as nearly 9,000 plastic straws or 22 Coldplay LPs! Because they’re incredibly difficult to recycle, most abandoned tents are destined for landfill or incineration if they can’t be re-used or donated to charities. https://lnkd.in/e7ZvJPuP

Happy almost-New Fiscal Year, NPO dears and darlings! Don't let this question ruin your good time: "When will you be issuing a press release about this sponsorship?" Your well-meaning new sponsors (and heck, even your oft-reminded renewing sponsors) may be asking this right about now. They don't realize what we non-profit PR folks all know - that sponsorships. Are. Not. News. However, happy sponsors keep the lights on and the mission moving, and as much as those sponsors love your organization's mission, they have strategically selected you to boost their own reputation. So, sometimes, you've got to turn this snoozefest into something delightful and (more importantly) something an outlet will actually cover. Here's how you do it ✨ It's OK to zoom out and share one key statistic (to tell us the status quo) ✨ But build your story around how your organization actually helps combat the issue ✨ Add the voices real people impacted by the good work of your organization ✨ Include how the new funding supports even more work like this ✨ Finish a vision for the future state Bottom line: If you've got to do it, tell the story behind the money. This month's nonprofit spotlight is Peacemaker. I got to sit down with Ricky Beauchamp and learn about the ways this organization can help, and also hear about the impact they've already made. Here's what we discussed: Q. What is one thing you want our community to know about this organization? A. They are a nonprofit that exists to benefit children's organizations. Q. How many were you able to help in 2023? A. The amounts vary by year depending on fundraising proceeds. Cumulatively in the past 9 years, they have donated $850,000 to several organizations. Their core 4 are Girls Inc, Development Wings, Children's Emergency Shelter, and the Boys & Girls Club in addition to other organizations. Q. What brought you to this organization? A. 10 years ago Ricky was approached by a client who dreamt of a nonprofit music festival. It would be a community asset, an economic driver for downtown Fort Smith, and benefit children's organizations. The rest is history. Q. What big events do you have coming up in 2024? A. Their 10th Annual Peacemaker Music Festival will take place on October 11th and 12th. Tickets can be purchased at https://lnkd.in/gCMDF6Ys Q. How can we help? A. The goal is to reach $1M in proceed donations to celebrate their 10th year anniversary! They are looking for corporate sponsorships as well as ticket sales and festival attendees.

I work with all kinds of organisations - from charities older than I am, to scale-ups looking to solidify their culture. From public bodies needing to follow a set path to festivals looking to forge their own way ahead. That’s the beauty of facilitation - I don’t need to be an expert in your organisation or sector. I don’t need to know everything about how your charity runs, I don't need to know how to pull off an amazing music festival. Just like the work I did with Boomtown Fair - my skill set is bringing people together, helping them find and keep focus and work together on whatever area they need. Organisational Development is one of my main areas of interest - we can work on planning an organisational strategy, team alignment, organisational culture and much more. But definitely don't ask me to run your festival... Philip&Hugo: 20 Years of Fame & Fuck-Ups // #12 One day can make a difference // Creativity can be a force for good. So when Hanna Verboom asked us to create a campaign for her do-good crowdfunding platform Get it done, we said ‘let’s do it’. Get It Done was about empowerment of local communities. The campaign should be too. The idea was simple. Let’s single-out a project from the platform and try to raise the funds needed in a single day. And so ‘Get It Done In A Day’ was born. We found our project: a group of talented youngsters wanted to set up an arts school - music, dance, theatre, painting - in Blikkiesdorp, a town ship near Cape Town. Together with these kids we’ve made bespoke thank-you videos for every donation to the arts school, all in one day. It was another impossible shoot. 50 mad cat kids from Blikkiesdorp. A small young Dutch crew (many thanks to Czar!). And 174 videos all shot and delivered to peoples socials in one day under the blazing South-African sun. Best of all, the funds were raised and the school became a reality. How one day can make a difference. You need time to come up with creative ideas.
