This groundbreaking technology is revolutionizing the field of biotechnology by enabling precise and targeted modifications to DNA. Here’s a closer look at what it is and how it works: CRISPR-Cas9 allows scientists to make precise, targeted changes to the DNA of living organisms. CRISPR stands for "𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬" and Cas9 is an enzyme that acts like a pair of molecular scissors to cut DNA at a specific location. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 🤷♂️? 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐍𝐀 (𝐠𝐑𝐍𝐀): A piece of RNA is designed to match the DNA sequence at the target site. 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝟗 𝐄𝐧𝐳𝐲𝐦𝐞: The Cas9 enzyme binds to the gRNA and follows it to the same location in the DNA sequence. 𝐂𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐍𝐀: Cas9 makes a cut in the DNA at the targeted location. 𝐃𝐍𝐀 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫: The cell's natural repair mechanisms kick in to repair the cut.
