We're incredibly proud of Ryan DuChanois and Yang Xia of our Houston member Solidec and Ian Goodine and Ethan Walko of our Boston member rStream for being selected for Activate's 2024 cohort! The two-year Activate Fellowship supports scientist-entrepreneurs as they transform their breakthroughs into high-impact climatetech startups. The 62 fellows in this cohort were selected from a pool of more than 1,000 applicants. Ryan DuChanois (CEO) and Yang Xia (CTO) co-founded Solidec in 2023, developing technology that extracts molecular building blocks from water and air, then upgrades them into pure chemicals and fuels without carbon emissions. Solidec won the 2024 TEX-E Prize just after joining the Greentown Houston community in February. They are part of Activate's Houston's first-ever cohort! Ian Goodine (CEO) and Ethan Walko (CTO) co-founded rStream in 2020 while completing their master’s degrees at UMass Amherst. Using robotics and AI, rStream sorts waste from a single input into recycling, compost, and trash containers with 90 percent accuracy. rStream has been developing its tech in Greentown Boston's prototyping lab since 2022, growing its lab footprint and team while collecting awards and launching pilots. Join us in congratulating these four innovators on this prestigious accomplishment—we look forward to seeing their progress throughout the program! https://lnkd.in/eyQeYRz5

Just a couple of months ago, a Yale School of Management and Yale School of the Environment joint degree student gave me the perfect answer when I asked her who would be the ideal person to speak on campus about supporting and accelerating climate tech innovation. Without hesitation, she said "Dawn Lippert at Elemental Excelerator". And I was happy to respond that she should immediately go register for the Yale University Innovation Summit to hear Dawn speak. Under Dawn's leadership, Elemental Excelerator has invested in over 150 startups across industries like energy, water, mobility, industry, agriculture, and nature-based solutions. These companies have raised over $8 billion in follow-on funding, driving innovation and equitable climate solutions. It's a model that prioritizes social equity, with many portfolio companies serving low- and moderate-income communities. As an alumna of Yale University and the Yale School of the Environment, Dawn left a lasting imprint on this place. She's cited by faculty and the administration as the dot on the horizon for current students to aim for, and for good reason. She's a human magnet for good ideas and people, who leads and motivates networks of organizations, and is also deeply invested in teaching and sharing everything that she learns along the way. We are deeply grateful that she is making the trip back to New Haven to speak at the upcoming Yale Innovation Summit w/Jahi Wise Nancy Pfund and Richard Kauffman Join us for what promises to be an inspiring and thought-provoking couple of days at the end of May. https://lnkd.in/em5Wr-Md Yale Ventures Amir Chireh Mehr Samantha Grassle Kim Karris Josh Geballe Amy Kundrat, MBA Jaime Carlson Adrian Deveny Brandon Middaugh Gordon Geballe Todd Cort Dan Esty #ClimateTech, #Innovation, #Leadership, #Sustainability, #SocialEquity, and #ClimateSolutions. #YaleInnovationSummit

🎓 Exciting news! We (Christian Martin Surland, Daniel Hoang, and myself) have just defended our thesis "Analyzing the Deep Tech Funding Deficit -Assessing the Case for Danish Universities' Investment in Bridging the Gap" and we're thrilled with the results! In an era where deep tech innovation is critical for societal advancement, it's crucial to address the funding challenges that hinder progress. Our research involved interviews with experts in the US and Germany at TUM, UnternehmerTUM, UVC, MIT and The Engine, as well as discussions with Danish universities and deep tech venture capitalists. We discovered that while Danish research institutions excel in patents, there's a struggle to fund deep tech ventures. A patient capital mindset needs to be adopted, and structuring fund models that combine for-profit with philanthropic funding should de-risk ventures until conventional investors are ready to step in. A big thank you to Argyro (Iro) Nikiforou and Simon Hertig for their invaluable support throughout this journey. 🔬🚀 #DeepTech #Innovation #Research #Funding #Entrepreneurship #Denmark DTU Skylab Massachusetts Institute of Technology DTU Entrepreneurship

When Bridget Gildea invited me onto the Curiosity Incubator | Accelerator for Good at Jesus College Cambridge, the first thing I said was "I'm not Cambridge Uni person" not because I didn't think I was good enough but because I felt that it was not my people. In my mind my people are everyday people just trying to get stuff done. Cambridge Uni seemed like a world away to me, and to some extent I was right. The picture sums this up for me. Only the fellows at the Uni are allowed on the grass. Nobody could tell me why. I can only assume that its to symbolise a them/us relationship. That its a symbols of who is better and who can access the quickest route to where they are going. That got me thinking about access, I'm sure there are places that I am allowed to 'walk on the grass' but others aren't. I'd really like to interrogate where those places are and when I find them I'd like to bring people with me, because only then can we decide that we didn't actually want to be there in the first place. The problem is 'the grass' is where the power and the money is. So the curiosity incubator has left me with more questions than answers (in a good way). What problems am I trying to solve and for who and why? What grass am I on? How do I bring people onto the grass? How do we encourage people to 'fuck around and find out' (in a good way, not a threatening one). These systems are built to keep people out, no innovation was ever made by playing to the rules - anyone want to walk on the grass with me? Massive thanks to Bridget Gildea, Jaideep Prabhu, Jason Mellad and Orsolya Ihasz, PhD for getting us thinking. Thanks to the rest of the cohort for the laughs and inspiration

Two #News articles exactly between 5 years, published on OrissaPOST and Financial Express (India), reflecting on the transformation from a ‘Rocket Student’ to a ‘Rocket Startup’. In February 2019, I was part of the highly-selective global Innovation & Entrepreneurship MIT Bootcamps at QUT (Queensland University of Technology). Making this Burla-to-Brisbane expedition a reality in itself was fraught with challenges, from securing sponsorships to administrative hurdles and logistical nightmares. After I returned from this eye-opening and exhilarating program, certified with ‘New Ventures Leadership’ by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I had no idea that leading a student rocketry team back then would spin-off into leading a rocketry venture now! The Universe has its way of manifesting synchronicities. “Drinking from the firehose of innovation” (As MIT Sloan School of Management likes to call it), truly revitalized my risk appetite and was a prime driver to starting up. Fast forward five years, the lessons of Disciplined Entrepreneurship from Bill Aulet and Erdin Beshimov continue to be a guiding light in this journey. Together as a dynamic and agile team, we are making steady progress in a frugal and capital-efficient way, with secured traction from beachhead customers. In this relentless pursuit of doing ‘hard things’, navigating an uncharted territory in a #deeptech sector, we have learnt to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Small glimmers of encouragement coupled with reflections of past experiences, is key to surviving this valley-of-death-phase. SpaceFields
