I have mixed feelings about this article: from one side, I can understand that infrastructure is a major obstacle to developing the H2 industry (that is why there are plenty of studies on the feasibility to transport H2 within existing gas pipelines), on the other end I cannot really see the small infrastructure approach making a dent in the overall scheme of things as the industry that will need H2 to abate the emissions, will need it in large quantities. A veritable smorgasbord of hot topics this week on Green Signals! Nigel Harris and I look at the challenges of using highly aggregated and simple averages to try and explain the complexity of the current dispute with ASLEF, but we also note (although perhaps with some caution) that Mick Whelan and Huw Merriman have met and talks are underway. Thank goodness and fingers crossed. HS2 is definitely going to Euston (Huw Merriman confirmed as much in our interview with him recently) and now it has been announced that the tunnels from Old Oak Common to Euston will be funded with public money, not private investment. The only surprising thing about that was that anyone is surprised. The only way the tunnels were going to be privately financed was if they were a (very) expensive part of a wider Euston deal and that was never going to happen in the timescales required. Hopefully now something pragmatic will happen with the station itself. We can but hope. And then we have the issue that seems never to go away - the ongoing uncertainty over the Jacobite steam train running between Fort William and Mallaig. At first glance to LinkedIn readers this may seem like a disinteresting story of rail enthusiasts not being allowed to play trains but it’s anything but. Important principles are at stake for the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and quite understandably, they need to get it right. Meanwhile, a much admired tourist attraction which the operator has done an otherwise excellent job of developing into an important part of the regional economy is now generating previously unheard of negative reactions to the ongoing uncertainty. Oh, and we have time to chat about my love for the Eurovision Song Contest and, it is fair to say, Nigel’s scepticism. Power leads us astray Latest #SenseOfFairness blogpost, reflecting on the lessons from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry as well as other recent scandals. Litanies of failure remind us of the need to lean against the tendencies that naturally come with power. The government failed, the local council and its TMO failed, Kingspan, Saint Gobain (Celotex) and Arconic failed, and worse. Their investors failed too. We all need to do better. "I’m not sure that power generally always corrupts, at least the power of those some far distances below the level of absolute power. But power does lead us astray, it does lead to misunderstandings and misreadings of situations. By its nature, it leads to a heedlessness of those with less power. Fairness requires those with power, even if they regard it as only a small degree of power, to lean hard against these natural tendencies." I am happy to confirm as ever that the Sense of Fairness blog remains a wholly personal endeavour.

Wow, and all this while truckers are schlepping and schlogging down the highway battling winter weather. Hmmm ... I wonder when did any of the #CashCows create an event for the drivers of the clients they charge confiscatory fees to ? I get it that the R&R Conference was a schmooze event and the #RecruitingProfessional of the Year Award is a #PayToPlay award. However , fawning all over yourselves, gushing the accolades about how wonderful the #Party was ... #WITHOUT providing a single mention of what #INNOVATIVE or #GAMECHANGING technology or technique was shared, discussed, or presented smacks of an utter lack of understanding of what a truck driver's life really is or the true issues of #DriverTurnover & #DriverRetention plaguing small and mid-size carriers. This is why I continually call out the #CashCows of #DriverRecruiting and #TheTruckingSwamp. And this is why #ProfessionalTruckDrivers have a genuine disdain for many of the "empty suits" that call themselves #DriverRecruiters. You folks could give a crap about the driver.
