This is big news for the solar industry – and an industry first for EDF Renewables UK ☀️ We are partnering with Nature Positive and the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) to study the ecological effects of solar farms at our Longfield solar farm in Essex. It's recognised that solar farms can enhance the local biodiversity, but this research will provide robust data to identify which biodiversity improvements are most effective and help to inform industry best practice in the future. The commercial and industrial (C&I) sectors now emerge as key players in this energy revolution. While designed to reduce grid electricity costs, C&I rooftop solar systems offer untapped potential. Paired with advanced battery storage, they could diminish reliance on distant wind and solar farms, safeguarding rural interests from unnecessary industrialization. The strategic use of vacant rooftop space in urban centers can deliver cost-effective, locally generated #electricity. To unlock this potential, supportive policies are paramount. Allowing surplus rooftop solar energy injection into the grid, coupled with necessary grid enhancements and revised access arrangements, can pave the way. State and local governments hold the reins to implement these policies swiftly, unburdened by national regulations. Proactive regions stand to attract and retain consumers with the promise of affordable, clean electricity. The Australian Government's role in advancing this cause is pivotal.
