The #SCA awards in Victoria have been opened for nominations re: #stratamanagement . There will always be a debate over the value of an award and the energy dedicated to the process. Winning an award looks great on a new business proposal and company website, an email signature and the individual awards are an amazing recognition of staff. And the awards SHOULD count for something. But how do we make them count for more WITHIN the industry? Many business operators I’ve spoken with lean towards being dissuaded in participating because of the trending correlation between state board members and the winners each year. And this happens in various states. Several also don’t like the poaching that appears to happen following an award. It’s hard to say why staff leave and it’s not really anybody’s business to be honest. But the crazy surge of contact after the awards each year is definitely a thing. And perhaps most frustrating is the lack of transparency and questions of conflict surrounding the voting. Suppliers who receive work facilitated by management companies have votes on the award submissions, with no visibly disclosed conflicts. Those same suppliers sponsor the SCA and mingle with the parties that they vote upon, deciding who wins what award. This is the sort of post that doesn’t get a tonne of engagement because of perception within the #strata community that associating with the post paints a target on your back within SCA circles. At least that is what people message me - fear of retribution. Thankfully, there’s an easy fix for most of this - make the submissions public, and the voting too. If that means less proprietary information is included, that’s fine. That information shouldn’t be privy to voting panels anyway. It always tends to leak, breaking commercial confidence - a fascinating game of Chinese-whispers from primary school. But I digress… There are I don’t know how many management companies in Victoria. Let’s say 2-300 of those are genuine (presuming we count franchises individually as the awards do). Why is it that so few submit for the awards? Once again, sometimes math is just math. Sam Osborne and Susan Chandler are going to put on a fantastic event this year. Let’s support that more. #ownerscorporation #bodycorporate #property

You are going to an awards ceremony, you are nominated for an award, and then you don’t win Not winning is a lot worse, than the feeling of winning. Who doesn’t love putting their best DJ & posh frock on and going to an awards bash? It’s only natural estate agencies should want their moment of glory. They slog away in the background for years and years hoping to make punch the air with their trophy in front of hundreds of their piers Losing awards feels significantly worse than the joy experienced when winning them. I was up for best growth of a U.K. client at Action Coach. My coach had won the same award a few months before. So it was all in the bag? Nope Some other firm won. My ego was bruised - yet it taught me a lesson Awards are OK, yet certainly not the be all And end all. Awards aren't the goal. Impact is. Awards are just a shiny bonus. Keep your eyes on the real prize. Awards are pretty good at putting a spotlight on you for a few hours, yet I think your potential clients are smarter than using awards as a proxy for deciding which estate agency to pick these days. Awards aren't important. Impact is. - Change lives - Create solutions - Solve problems - Make a dent in the universe That's real success.

What to expect on Awards Night: Many people think Awards Ceremonies are just for finalists, however, that’s not necessarily true. Of course, a ceremony wouldn’t be complete without these people, but an awards night is so important for so many reasons. Firstly, they act as a great way to entertain your staff, letting them blow off steam after a long and busy year. You can also use it as a way of thanking clients for all of their support throughout the previous 12 months. Secondly, it’s great for networking. It’s not often that you can be in a room with hundreds of your peers, so see it as a chance to network. Find out what other people are doing well (and not so well) and make contacts for the future. You never know when knowing an extra contractor will come in handy. Thirdly, it’s a great way to boost team morale. So many hours are spent onsite/in offices with a disproportionate amount of time spent having fun outside of work. Change that by attending an industry awards night together and having some fun – and maybe add the cherry on top by winning a Silver or Gold Award in one of the various categories. This year, the National Building and Construction Awards will be held at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, Tower Bridge, London on Thursday, October 24th, with a three-course meal, wine and fantastic entertainment included in the ticket price. Every voyage is marked by a beginning and a destination. - by Sun Yu Li I am having an appointment here with a vvip client. With many options, come many opportunities but Life required us to focus on 'one thing'. That is the one thing you want to do, enjoy doing and look forward to it. The rewards you get are beyond the tangibles. Of which you know you can add value to your client. And you know your client respects your advice. That is truly a blessing. #JNconsulting #realestateconsulting #singaporeproperty #addvalue #respect

Preparing a quality award entry takes time and energy, so if you don’t end up with an award, it is understandable to be disappointed and think it wasn't worth the effort. But it is worth the effort. You may not win a shiny award, but you could be nominated, short-listed or a finalist and these can all be used to boost your profile and enhance your credibility. Most business awards have a program of events around them, like a gala presentation, which are opportunities to meet and network with your peers. There’s the chance to share your story of how and why you began your business, which could be just the thing someone else needs to hear to get started. You could be an inspiration to someone! And when you’re preparing your submission, it can be a timely reminder of the little victories along the way and that is a boost to your ego. It is also a time to take an in-depth look at your business and celebrate your achievements and work on your weaknesses. It is a useful way of finding out how you compare and contrast to other businesses. So even if you don't win (although that would be nice), there is still lots to be gained by the process. Credible Source Solutions has an excellent track record for preparing winning awards entries. Since the announcement of the finalists in this year’s EADT Suffolk Business Awards, I’ve been reflecting on the unexpected insights and learnings of being on ‘that side’ of the award process. For those who don’t know, we’ve been lucky enough to be on the recipient end of a judging panel (and to have emerged victorious twice). The very practice of allowing that external assessment of yourself and your business is, as so many of you know only too well, somewhat intimidating – no matter how sure you are of your business and your experience. This time, however, and having historically won the Customer Service category in both Suffolk and Norfolk, I felt incredibly honoured to be asked to judge this particular category. Initially, I found myself thinking ‘this will be a breeze’, and that I had nothing to fear or consider. What I found, however, is that it was far more of an opportunity for self-reflection and benchmarking than I might have considered prior to taking part. How can you not be faced with an entry or a conversation from a vibrant goal-setting business, and not find yourself looking at how this compares to what you do, or how you reached this point in the journey? I’m someone who has always been of the view that a child can teach an adult as much as the adult can teach the child – and I suppose this exercise is similar. I learned from their desire, entrepreneurship and their unique approaches to managing customer interaction. My takeaways for anyone considering being a business award judge: - Do your homework on the business and seek to raise questions which are truly beneficial for your learning of them and their understanding of you. - Be self-reflective (not selfish) throughout the process, considering whether the activity leads itself to more learning and development you might require. - Embrace the chance to extend your network and relationships in directions you may never have considered. - Take time to reflect on the process with your own colleagues or peers, being sure to bring to mind particular areas which now seem evident for your own business improvement or for your chance to become active in the art of mentoring. Good luck to all of the finalists from myself and the MAD-HR Ltd team.
