I loved meeting our incredible Madame Vice President this week, but I looked around the room full of our region's leaders and I felt that contagious competitive busyness to burnout buzz all around-not to mention visibly sick people.
Projects we are setting in motion now are the next decade of our lives and defining the next century of our region and we need our leaders to stick with them and work together. Sick people can't do that. As much as yinz may think I’m a government nerd, I’m much more a nerd for government people. I love cheering on our member representatives making the “we tried that buts,” and the “thats cool but we can’t try that because-es,” into policy innovation and regional assets. I am a little worried about all our regional human assets.
At yesterday’s weekly CONNECT (Congress of Neighboring Communities) staff meeting we each answered the question, “what do you love about HOW you work?” In the beginning it was silence, really how often do we reflect on what we like about ourselves, let alone how we get stuff done? And then it was a truly inspiring discussion of self and team acknowledged human intention and excellence in a range of talents and strategies around energy, structure, and flow.
One crystal clear takeaway I’m glad I finally have words for is: executive leadership in start-up, nonprofit and municipal gov first and foremost has to not lose their shit. Yinz know what I mean.
We’ve all had bosses who were clearly maxed out, feeling inadequate and passed those bad vibes throughout the whole team. Teams where everyone is sick, tired and behind all the time. The best leaders are the ones who protect their teams' (staff, partners, volunteers etc) energy so they can all work as their best selves, and to do what they need to be their best selves. If I had one wish for 2024 it is that our region’s leadership reflects on HOW they really love to work-and help each other to do it! #leadership #capacity #longgame #burnoutprevention
