As we continue the third week on the topic of Growth Mindset and Endless Pursuit of Excellence, Dan Kime talked about the 3rd Agreement - “Don’t make assumptions.”
The key to this agreement is to become aware that most assumptions are nothing more than stories we tell ourselves when we don’t know the actual truth.
Almost all of the needless suffering in our lives is rooted in making assumptions, taking things personally, and misusing our word. We listen to the voices talking in our heads. One assumption leads to another assumption. We jump to conclusions, take our story personally, and react by sending emotional poison with our word.
Dan reminded us of the following quotes from the author Don Miguel Ruiz:
“Making assumptions is just looking for trouble because most assumptions are not the truth; they’re fiction.”
“Most of our assumptions are made unconsciously because we have agreed to communicate this way. We have agreed that it is not safe to ask questions. If we just ask questions, we won’t have to make assumptions. It’s always better to ask and be clear.”
“Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one
agreement, you can completely transform your life.”
Following this agreement takes a lot of practice and Dan encouraged our team this morning to consider what stories they may be telling themselves and to challenge them to change their narrative.
Do you find yourself making assumptions? Has this had an impact on a business relationship? We'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below.
