NASA cancels VIPER lunar rover, while China lunar and satellite programs succeed and grow (2024/08) NASA cancelled the VIPER rover mission to prospect for water near the lunar south pole, analyzing samples from the surface and up to 1 meter deep. This rover was completed, just awaiting testing. In sharp contrast to this failure, China's Chang'e 6 completed its mission to return lunar samples from the lunar far side near the south pole. Besides an ambitious lunar program leading to a permanent lunar base, China is now starting to launch Starlink-style satellites for several megaconstellations, integrating broadband internet, navigation, Earth monitoring, weather, and military applications. Chinese companies are also advancing towards reusable rockets to lower launch costs like SpaceX did. Coordinated Lunar #Time (LTC) might be coming soon. The White House is urging #NASA to develop a new time zone for the #Moon called Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC). Due to the Moon's different gravitational field, time moves faster there compared to Earth - by 58.7 microseconds each day (which can significantly impact spacecraft synchronization efforts). The goal is to ensure coordination among national and private endeavors. NASA and the #ESA are both working on lunar time systems. At a certain point, international agreement and a centralized coordinating body might be necessary. The US aims to implement LTC by 2026 for its crewed mission #Artemis-3, which requires extreme navigation precision. However, without coordinated timekeeping, communication and data transmission between spacecraft, satellites, and Earth could face challenges. #space https://lnkd.in/dTjHijEm

The delays in NASA's Artemis moon program are making some members of Congress nervous. Last week, NASA announced that it's now targeting September 2025 for its Artemis 2 mission, which will send four astronauts around the moon, and September 2026 for Artemis 3, which will put boots on Earth's nearest neighbor for the first time in more than half a century. These new Artemis launch dates represent delays of about a year for each flight. The rightward push was spurred by the need to conduct more studies of key Artemis hardware, such as the heat shield of NASA's Orion crew capsule, which didn't perform quite as expected during the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission in late 2022. - - - #NASA #moonprogram #artemis #Space #spaceze #spaceship #spacex #spacestation #universe #astronomy #astronaut #stars #spaceshuttle #explore

How NASA Uses Simple Technology to Track Lunar Missions: NASA is using a simple but effective technology called Laser Retroreflective Arrays (LRAs) to determine the locations of lunar landers more accurately. They will be attached to most of the landers from United States companies as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Service (CLPS) initiative. LRAs are inexpensive, small, and lightweight, allowing future lunar orbiters […]

The White House wants US space agency Nasa to develop a new time zone for the Moon - Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC). Because of the different gravitational field strength on the Moon, time moves quicker there relative to Earth - 58.7 microseconds every day. This might not seem like much, but it can have a significant impact when trying to synchronise spacecraft. The US government hopes the new time will help keep national and private efforts to reach the moon co-ordinated. #NASA #Moon #space #time #LTC https://lnkd.in/grGYdqmu

Founder and CEO at IBX | Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of X-energy, Intuitive Machines, Axiom Space and Quantum Space
Intuitive Machine built, launched and softly landed on the surface of the moon with many firsts. Just incredibly remarkable!!! We are creating a new space ecco system with tremendous future potential and economic viability!!!!! We performed so many firsts: First cryogenic fueling of a payload on the pad. First flight of a linerless compsite fuel tank. First firing of a metholox engine beyond GEO. First firing of a methalox engine in lunar orbit. First multiple restart of a metholox engine in space. First use of a Thermal Venting System for cryogenic cooling. First use of a Radio Frequency Measurement Gauge for propellant measurement. First in-line processing of a delta-position optical flow measurement in a live Guidance Navigation and Control system at the moon. First commercial mission to the lunar surface. First use of a commercial lunar capable data and tracking network. First mission ever to land south of 80 degrees south on the moon. Truly remarkable with limited budget and short period of time. This is a game changer!!!!! A new chapter in a gateway to future!!!! A resounding success by any measure!!!!
