Ops Folks, 2 months left in 2023 It's time to get going on those 2024 goals It’s a critical alignment point for your upcoming year. While setting them make sure you use goals to: 💰- align your comp plans 🥅 - prioritize your ops road map 🎊 - align your hiring model 📊 - align data model to goal tracking 📟 - position your tech stack plans If you miss these you will create misalignment at critical junctures in your revenue operation Which will lead to missing those goals next year

It's incredible how one key hire can catalyze transformative growth. 🚀 Let's talk about a client we had - a rideshare company, already successful in their market. But they faced challenges: • A technology team limited in scale. • A need to iterate rapidly on their product. • Original architecture that just wasn't scalable. Then enters a full stack engineer with both tech lead and architectural prowess. Within mere weeks, he drafted a robust architecture designed for true scalability. That was a game-changer! From there? Our collaboration soared: • 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. • 𝗢𝗻𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿. • 𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. The valley of despair.  We had just entered it and 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲. 1-to-2 is harder than 0-to-1.  At my last company, problem # 1 was that early vintage clients had started to churn (see my last post). 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 # 𝟮... Technical debt reared its head.  And roared. 💽Two products.  Limited upsell possibilities. 🧙♂️ Aging stack (ZEND, PHP). 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱-𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: We had org debt hiding behind the tech debt. 🚫No real customer success function. 📉Hired the wrong sales VP and... ⏳...waited too long to fix it. Luck smiled on us.  Three amazing, incredibly lucky hires. First, VP of Customer success fixed a lot of the org debt.  Next, VP of Sales got sales back on track. Then, VP of Product fixed # 2 and # 3.   • Rewrote the code base    • New stack from top to bottom    • All new customers go on the new stack, which was near-term a worse experience but the right decision And things started humming.  But payroll had just ballooned (though still profitable). I thought we would grow into it or raise $ (not totally unreasonable in that environment). I was so, so, so wrong.

Day 2 of 20 Crazy Habits of Software Engineers at Google and Bloomberg Writing snippets. These do not have to be long at all, but should contain the entirety of your day, however minimal you may think it is. What documents you’ve read, who you talked to, what tasks you completed etc. This should also be made available to your TL/Managers after every week. It’s a really good habit to get into as soon you join your workforce.

🏃♂️ The Challenge of Hiring Top Tech Talent Many of us in the tech industry face the ongoing challenge of finding the right engineers and data scientists. Striking a balance between assessing technical skills and evaluating for cultural fit is often the most difficult aspect. Here's a recent approach I've adopted for hiring strong tech talent: 1. Present a Real-World Task: Provide a realistic task based on your team's experience, ideally including context for the broader product. This allows candidates to showcase their problem-solving skills in a familiar setting. 2. Focus on Problem-Solving: Don't get caught up in whether the candidate codes or not. The key is to assess their reasoning and ability to deliver a solution, not just generate code. 3. Beyond Systems Architecture: Traditional systems architecture interviews often focus on rote memorization of patterns and solutions. This doesn't necessarily translate to real-world problem-solving skills.
