The National Forestry Conference 2024 at Newbury Racecourse brought together a packed agenda of exceptional speakers who discussed a wide range of topics—from diversification and agroforestry to UK timber processing. The event was informative and invaluable in highlighting key opportunities for the forestry industry. NexGen’s Simon Place came back to the office with these key takeaways: 🌳 Rising Timber Demand: As we work towards decarbonising the economy, timber demand is skyrocketing. The solution? More commercial woodland to reduce imports and meet demand sustainably. 🌲 Forestry Income: Beyond timber, woodland-related activities offer numerous revenue streams, leading to greater financial returns for landowners. 🌳 Diversification in Forestry: Just as farms diversify for income, forestry must adapt to new opportunities, especially in engaging with people and communities. 🌲 Agroforestry Potential: Whether simple or complex, we’re already practising agroforestry—often without the formal label. Greater collaboration between farmers and foresters is essential to understand each other’s objectives, priorities and common ground. Why Timber? So many reasons ... it's also worth adding that before the timber, there is a sustainable forest which supports ecosystem services and biodiversity, tourism, community use and multiple other outcomes, including other wood-based products.

This week in the House, I was asked how my Ministry is addressing the rising operational costs in the forestry sector caused by the unfair Liberal carbon tax, which is making it increasingly difficult for businesses to stay competitive. Our government is taking action by cutting red tape, reducing the gas tax, and investing $60 million over the next 3 years in biomass projects to support the production of alternative forest products. We stand firmly behind the forestry industry, promoting innovation and sustainability. We’re thrilled the Clean Energy Regulator has announced reduced audit requirements for eligible Plantation Forestry projects 🌱    What does this mean for landholders? 🤔    New or existing eligible projects can now opt-in for these 'alternative assurance' arrangements, meaning only one scheduled audit is required.    What are the benefits of this change?     Projects used to have a minimum of three audits.
