Tuesday Takes: Return on Design (ROD)
This graduation season I can’t stop but think about talented grads entering the world of healthcare architecture and being told to design bus-station-style seating because of an existing procurement deal, or to specify vinyl flooring because that’s what hospital maintenance staff is accustomed to cleaning. This contrast between the creative fervor they've been encouraged to nurture and the often uninspiring reality of healthcare design is the disheartening reality many will face.
Throughout their education, architecture students have been urged to think outside the box, to be bold, and to push the boundaries of traditional design. Yet, the healthcare industry sometimes imposes a different set of expectations, favoring safety and functionality over innovation, and demanding conformity through design standards. These regulations and standards frequently stifle creativity. Fortunately, more and more healthcare systems are recognizing the value of design, and architects eagerly anticipate the opportunity to push boundaries, integrating the latest research and technologies to demonstrate the return on investing in design.
Evidence-based design has shown that innovative, well-designed healthcare spaces can significantly improve patient outcomes, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. Studies have demonstrated that such environments can lead to faster recovery times, lower infection rates, and increased staff satisfaction. These positive outcomes not only improve the quality of care but also provide a substantial return on investment through increased efficiency and reduced operational costs.
Return on Design (ROD) in healthcare is not only about measurable benefits but also about the continuous innovation and forward-thinking approach that architects bring to hospital design. By adopting flexible design standards, healthcare systems can allow architects to leverage design as a tool for positive change, ensuring that hospitals evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of patients and the healthcare industry as a whole.
