Almost everyone in my bubble is talking about the so-called circular economy and saying that we are on a good path. Really? 🤔 Let us make a quick reality check: ♻️ Only 9% of all the plastic waste generated globally is recycled 🌿 79% ends up in landfills or in nature 🔥 12% is incinerated So it is quite obvious, that someone has to take care of the 79%, right? This is exactly what everwave is doing, and our monthly impact report is our proof of progress. 🌊 🗑️ Including February, we collected a total of 1,433,270 kilograms of waste and plastic from waters around the world. 👥 Our dedicated global cleanup teams consist of 28 members and our german team consists of 12 members. 📢 We launched our new Website in February. This Earth Day, Hanwha stands in support of the decision to choose the planet over plastics. In 2022, 175 UN countries pledged to create a binding agreement on plastic pollution by 2024. The theme for 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics." 🌍 It is a day to reflect on the preciousness of our Earth. A post mentioned a NYT article titled: "Trash or Recycling? Why Plastic Keeps Us Guessing". They had an excellent picture showing how tiny the recycling capacity is comparing to the amounts of materials we're trying to recycle. 🛑 Neither Trash nor Recycle are the answer. Nor this is a Plastic only problem. ➡ Trash - is negative, same as burning. 💡 Should stop completely. ➡ Recycle - is arguably just barely positive on average, although at very low efficiency, and w/ many challenges like degrading quality, need to mix w/ virgin material, etc. 💡 Keep it going, just don’t invest or focus too much, nor expect it can overcome the decades of challenges by itself. ➡ Reduce / Reuse / Zero-Waste - are known solutions to recycling’s under-capacity and low efficiency. Thus, should be main focus and mass invested in. 💡 They are also an order+ : - Higher efficiency - Lower pollution - Less invested ➡ Single-use is a significant problem in all materials even if w/ plastic gets mentioned most. 💡 Compostable / Bioplastics are not the answer  either, no single-use would be.
