Abstract submissions are open here: https://lnkd.in/gBGxdjbM Session Description Floods are the most common type of natural disaster and the rate of flood-related disasters has more than doubled since the start of the 21st century. Warning systems can mitigate the human impacts from flooding by reducing fatalities and economic damage. Populations in low- and middle-income countries remain the most vulnerable. Providing actionable flood warnings requires solving problems across an extended workflow involving observation, modeling, forecasting, warning, impact evaluation, and decision making. This session is dedicated to sharing work related to all aspects of this workflow. I am so happy to share that my first academic paper has been published 🎉 This milestone represents a long but incredibly rewarding journey over the last 2 and a half years. I am deeply grateful to my advisor, Dr. Laura Condon, and my co-author, Dr. Balaji Rajagopalan, for the endless support throughout this journey. A special shoutout to David Woodson, PhD for the contribution during the initial stages of this project. The paper focuses on understanding the long-term patterns of streamflow predictability and its relationship to streamflow variability in the Upper Colorado River Basin. By using nonlinear dynamical time series analysis, we identified patterns of predictability and explored the connections to streamflow variability and spatial correlations. This work aims to deepen our understanding of watershed dynamics and how shifts in predictability regimes could impact water resource management in a changing climate. Exploring the rising tide of flood risks for humans: Phong Le, a computational hydrologist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is helping develop unique, detailed simulations of watersheds to provide better long-term predictions of flooding 🌊 Le is working as part of a collaborative effort to better understand and mitigate the impact of severe storms in Southeast Texas. He’s developing a modeling framework that could help scientists understand the potential impact of regional flooding in future years. “These are important modeling capabilities that significantly move our sustainability science forward,” Le said. “While we are specifically using the framework to study Southeast Texas, our results are generalizable enough to be applied to other areas of the country.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eXnaYbuY

🌊 Exciting insights from my latest research on seagrass resilience to marine heatwaves! 🌱🔥 Thanks to the brilliant team at QUT Centre for Data Science, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), my dedicated supervisors Paul Wu, Kerrie Mengersen, and Kathryn McMahon. Here's a quick dive into our findings: 🌟 Study Overview: Goal: To improve management strategies by evaluating the effects of varying marine heatwave scenarios on seagrass ecosystems. Approach: Utilized a Dynamic Bayesian Network to assess seagrass resilience, focusing on their resistance, recovery, and extinction risks. 🔍 Key Takeaways: Duration Matters: Longer heatwaves (90 days) significantly impair seagrass, increasing recovery times and extinction risks. Frequency Impact: More frequent heatwaves without recovery gaps greatly elevate extinction risks. So pround to give a presentation at Climate Adaptation workshop: Structural Design for Coastal Flood Resilience - Princeton University https://lnkd.in/gf_KwXrX This by-invitation only workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, ATC Endowment Fund, and Princeton University. The overall objective of the workshop is to gather academics, practitioners, stakeholders, and other experts to discuss climate adaptable structural solutions for coastal resilience. The session themes of the workshop are: (1) State-of-Research/Practice, (2) Experimental & Numerical Capabilities & Needs, (3) Structural Engineering Design Approaches, (4) Practitioner Perspectives, (5) Educational Efforts, and (6) Identifying Goals and Gaps. Some outcomes of the workshop will be to form connections and foster collaborations , sharing experiences and resources of climate adaptable solutions, and identifying the following: deficiencies in flood design practices, gaps in basic science, and needs in codes and standards. A workshop report will be written and made available to the public following the event.

Our first research focuses on "Assessing the correlation of time-series soil moisture and ground deformation at Petacciato Landslide, Italy." Using SAR remote sensing, we investigate natural and human-caused hazards, with a focus on the Petacciato Landslide, Italy. This research, supervised by Paolo Mazzanti and Francesca Bozzano, has the potential to shed light on critical insights for hazard applications. I am happy to share that our paper has been accepted and published online in Applied Ocean Research. Storm surge is one of the important coastal engineering problems. Therefore, having a better understanding of coastal storm surges is essential in encountering storm surges with potential severe typhoons and climate change. Taiwan, located in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean with frequent severe typhoons experienced, provides us with a good opportunity to understand the mechanism of storm surges. 1. We developed a surge-tide-wave coupled model, COMCOT-SURGE + SWAN, to seamlessly simulate storm surges, tides, and waves from offshore to nearshore. 2. We found that wave energy dissipation due to wave breaking amplified coastal storm surges by 20-50% on the east coast of Taiwan, which features a steep sea bottom slope. 3. We integrated seven marine buoys and eleven coastal tide gauges to compare against input wind fields and simulation results of storm surges and waves for the east Taiwan regions. Today, nine years after I started working on it, my paper investigating the water movement on a slope in West Greenland has finally been published in Water Resources Research. Many attempts, model codes, manuscripts, and more people helping than I could list here, to finally have this piece of work out there. It also marks my one year anniversary (+ two weeks) of submitting my PhD Thesis, which with this work, is now truly done and completed.
