Spent the past week in Philadelphia planning for the Mpact Transit + Community conference! Great to get together with the National Steering Committee & Local Host Committee and get to know this year's host city. Lots of great walks, bites, sights, and of course, session development.
Huge thanks to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for having us, the NSC for all their hard work, and the Local Host Committee chairs, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission for showing us all the great things Philadelphia has to offer.
See y'all in October for #MpactPhilly!
Yesterday, March 3rd, representatives of California Community Reinvestment Corporation virtually attended the National Housing Conference (NHC)’s “2024 Solutions for Housing Communications” convening. The event featured panels with pro-housing thought leaders, who joined to discuss the importance of accurate, subversive, and poignant storytelling when building public support for housing.
Pro-housing advocacy must contend with the misinformed narratives on risk, public feelings of helplessness, and personal apathies that surround housing activism to mobilize all hands available to address the shortage. Outreach efforts must also take comprehensive steps to engage diverse perspectives, with the end goal being to make the fight as collective as possible.
Everyone has stock in an equitably housed nation, and engaging with solutions today will invariably improve the future for all.
The creation of adequate housing supply is still tentative, but CCRC is committed to both advocacy and action in the continued fight for an equitable housing market.

I have attended this conference at various times throughout my 21 years as a real estate professional... so it is a real honor to be selected as a presenter/panelist on the topic of proactive, authentic community engagement and integration as an essential aspect of affordable housing development at this year's Florida Housing Coalition Annual Statewide Affordable Housing Conference🏘💥💯.
Session Deets:
Turn Opposers to Supporters: Tips for Engaging Elected Officials and Stakeholders to Overcome NIMBYs
Tuesday, August 27 at 3:45pm
Moderator: Suzanne Cabrera, CFRE
Speakers: Christic Henry, George Kruse, Jon D. Brown, Ellen O'Conner, John Rodriguez
Session Summary:
Too often, housing advocates struggle to gain the support of local elected officials as well as neighbors in their plans to increase housing for those most in need. When they do, at times they are met with concerns about public perceptions, lack of funding or the desire to maintain the status quo of neighborhoods. In this interactive session, participants will explore proactive strategies to address NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) opposition in housing and community development projects, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, building trust, collaboration, and understanding with stakeholders, and getting to yes with your local officials by properly framing the request.
I look forward to interacting with attendees and co-presenters on this topic... and I promise to go live📸😊. #innovation#affordability#accessibility#attainable#housingforall#community#value#trustbuilding#consensusmatters#annualhousingconference#FHC
Together, we can tackle our most challenging problems. This week I was inspired not by the lofty goals, illuminating research or the theory of change but by the practical, tactical, gritty commitment to get it done. Thanks to the City and partners for hosting the first affordable housing week at city hall and to so many partners in other rooms working on policy change at the state level. A few reflections in the blog linked below.
What an invigorating morning it was at the #Edcon conference! Our team had the honor of joining forces with the insightful Brett Waller and the dedicated members of the Seattle Police Department for a panel discussion on a cause dear to us all: Community Safety.
In our conversation, we delved into ways to enhance the safety of our residential communities. We discussed a range of strategies, brought our collective knowledge to the table, and concentrated on the newest methods, technologies, and resources. Our aim was to bolster neighborhood safety, working hand in hand with community partners and leveraging available resources.
However, this is merely the beginning of a much larger conversation.
We believe in the power of community and collective wisdom. So, we're curious: What are your best tips for fostering safety in multifamily communities?
Share your strategies and experiences below. Let’s continue the dialogue and together, create safer, more secure neighborhoods.

Why Community Land Trusts Matter for Our Future
I had the chance to attend LISC San Antonio’s event on community ownership, and it really hit home how important Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are for fair and just development.
Julia Duranti-Martínez from LISC NYC talked about how community ownership can give people the power to stop displacement and keep local businesses and organizations in place. It’s about helping BIPOC-led businesses, and community groups have a real shot at staying in their neighborhoods by owning affordable spaces.
The panel, featuring experts like Juleny Santa Cruz, M.Ed. (ROC USA), Crystal Requejo (MEXICAN AMERICAN UNITY COUNCIL, INC), and Nadia Mavrakis (Culturingua) moderated by Julia, discussed how CLTs allow communities to protect their spaces, build wealth, and shape their own future. This conversation was a great reminder that ownership isn’t just about land or buildings—it’s about empowerment and economic justice.
If we want lasting change, we need more CLTs in our communities.

Something happened to Dearborn County.
We used to be the community which let our historic downtowns deteriorate. We ignored -- if not abhorred -- the Ohio River. We didn't see much value in artistic and cultural offerings. We had an aversion to working together.
Whether it is the IEDC READI program or the recently relaunched OCRA Stellar Pathways program, we are often told that our communities need to go bigger, bolder, and more transformational with our investments and future planning. If you sit back and take inventory, you will realize Dearborn County is already well down this path.
Have you seen East Central High School's new natatorium? The snow-making innovation at Perfect North Slopes? What about the concepts for the City of Lawrenceburg Riverwalk project? Or do we realize the milestone that is the new, state-of-the-art cancer center which St. Elizabeth Healthcare just opened in Greendale? We even have one of the most popular night clubs in the Cincinnati area at Hollywood Casino's Boogie Nights.
All this right here in lil' ol' Dearborn County.
What got into us? What changed our "Humble Hoosier" mentality?
Some might say it is just the result of riverboat gaming or Cincinnati's urban sprawl and population growth spilling over state lines into Dearborn County. If you ask me, it came down to visionary leadership and innovators. People which we at One Dearborn have the fortune to engage with each day.
We shouldn't scoff at big ideas which appear beyond our grasp. As our track record shows, with the proper buy-in and prioritization, such ideas are more achievable in Dearborn County and Southeast Indiana than we give ourselves credit for.
For Dearborn County to succeed in becoming an Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs#StellarPathways designee, we'll need people of many backgrounds, ideas, and desires for our communities to be thoughtfully engaged.
It's a big table. I hope you'll pull up a chair.
Exciting news! Introducing the Saint Paul Shared Ownership Collaborative!
We are teaming up with BIPOC-led organizations with a shared belief that our communities should have the power, resources, and support to control and make decisions about their land, jobs, and housing.
We imagine strong networks of shared ownership businesses working together. Our goal is to empower local community members to create, own, and protect their homes and workplaces. As a leading organization in Minnesota, we advocate for policies, allocate resources, and offer expertise to make shared ownership models a practical and available way for BIPOC and intentionally underinvested communities to build wealth.
As a group that values racial justice, cooperation, and abundance, we understand the importance of working together to create positive change. Our collaboration includes Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers, Model Cities of Saint Paul, Inc., Rondo Community Land Trust, and @West Side Community Organization (WSCO)

Isaac Yablo is Senior Advisor for Community Safety for the City of Boston. He moves seamlessly across scales, from city-wide strategy to on-scene response. In his work, we watched how well Isaac sees people, where they are coming from, and the structures that surround them: the not visible things that are driving visible behaviors.
Isaac has shown us what it can mean to be seen.
