❗ Attention Resource Entities with Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) and Wind-powered Generation Resources (WGRs) in Texas! ❗ 🌡 ERCOT Urges Swift Implementation of Ride-Through Enhancements In response to critical reliability risks posed by ride-through failures, ERCOT is calling on Resource Entities to expedite the implementation of protection system enhancements and other improvements. These measures, based on insights from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), aim to maximize frequency and voltage ride-through capability, bolstering the stability of our energy grid. ✅ Action Required: Resource Entities are requested to report their implementation plans (including schedules) by August 1, 2024, ensuring swift action to enhance system resilience. "While the evolution of demand in ERCOT is, by itself, enough to raise concerns about the future of resource adequacy, there has also been inadequate investment in dispatchable sources of generation in ERCOT — leading to greater overall system instability. In fact, ERCOT loads have been increasingly in excess of dispatchable generation capacity in both frequency and quantity since 2018. In 2023 alone, load exceeded dispatchable generation capacity for over 1,000 hours. This raises the risk of resource inadequacy and has coincided with an increase in ERCOT conservation notices and energy emergency alerts. There is also a general geographic inconsistency between load growth and generation capacity investment across ERCOT. This is not likely to self-correct, given that the drivers of load growth are centered around new industrial activity and population growth in high-load areas in the Texas Triangle — the urban megaregion consisting of the Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio metropolitan areas."

Sound familiar?    The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is seeking FERC approval for a new plan to strengthen grid reliability. MISO cites increasing demands and shrinking reserve margins as reasons for the proposal.  As reported in a brief in Utility Dive, “The Midcontinent Independent System Operator on Thursday asked federal regulators to approve a capacity accreditation methodology that aims to better account for how much different resources bolster grid reliability during stressed periods.”   Back in February, Peter Hartley, Ken Medlock, and Shih Yu (Elsie) Hung published a report focused on ERCOT about this very issue. Reliability is about balancing the market during high-stress periods. This makes controllability, or dispatchability, of resources a high priority issue.   What can be done to enhance reliability? So, to go with the WA DER (Distributed Energy Roadmap) it appears there is going to be a NCERR - a National Consumer Energy Resources Roadmap. *sigh* It's likely that the majority of their requirements and findings will be stopped by the rabbit-proof fence (or an ESB implementation requirement), but there are a couple that I hope make it through... # technical regulatory settings for consumer energy resources; # “one body” to take responsibility for setting DER technical standards; and # V2G enablement I suppose we'll know more in February... #DER #NCERR #CER #WA #WEM https://lnkd.in/gjcrhhg5
