Calpine's California Battery Plant Is Among World's Largest: Calpine's billion-dolllar Nova Power Bank near Los Angeles will be among the largest in the world when it comes online later this year. According to Reuters, the plant is built on the site of a failed gas-fired power plant and "will be able to power about 680,000 homes for up to four hours when charged." From the report: The 680-megawatt lithium-ion battery bank is big even for California, which boasts about 55% of the nation's power storage capacity, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Calpine will bring online 620 MW of the bank in two phases this year starting in the summer and open the remaining 60 MW in 2025. [...] Calpine, best known in the state for its fleet of gas plants, has about 2,000 MW of battery capacity under development. California was a pioneer in mandating that its utilities begin procuring energy storage more than a decade ago. The state is expected to need about 50 gigawatts of battery storage to meet its 2045 goal of getting all of its power from carbon-free sources, up from about 7 GW today. This week I testified before the Senate Natural Resources and Economic Development Committee on what an energy expansion means for Texas. Looking at new data from Texas 2036 The Future of Texas Energy Project, pursuing an “all of the above” energy policy means greater net energy production, exports, and economic growth. Our project models how the state’s energy market will perform given certain assumptions about energy technology cost and efficiency improvements over time. These models are energy agnostic (don’t favor one energy source over another) and don’t include proposed regulatory targets such as Net Zero. The data indicates that Texas can witness better economic opportunities through greater oil and gas production, higher levels of renewable energy generation, and increased exports of energy commodities to domestic and international markets. These benefits come with lower emissions from several key economic sectors and an overall improvement in the state’s emissions intensity. https://lnkd.in/giqmhfBb

#Texas has become the biggest clean energy story on a number of fronts, but recently I looked into its new dominance in #energystorage. This was always California' domain — that state built up the modern energy storage market through a decade of dedicated policy work. Texas had basically no grid battery action until about four years ago. But in 2024, Texas is set to build more grid battery capacity than California; it's going to build as much as the whole U.S. did last year, in the biggest ever year for the industry. This is wild stuff, but it's a testament to how quickly things move when a market lets clean energy technology compete on its merits, and makes it relatively easy to build things quickly. And it only happened because enterprising developers like Plus Power, Key Capture Energy, Broad Reach Power jumped into the market and figured out new business models themselves, instead of waiting to see someone else make money on batteries there first. Now the early movers are doubling down, and a whole host of other companies are jumping in. And with Texas operating more utility-scale solar than any other state, the opportunities are going to keep growing. Here's my write-up for Canary Media Inc. https://lnkd.in/e_pMxubh
Texas will add more grid batteries than any other state in 2024

Over 1 million people in the Commonwealth suffer from a high energy burden, with some households paying over 30% of their total income just on energy alone. But, you can help change that. Your response to this Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities survey will influence how gas and electric rates are structured. As a Bay State company, Perch believes that some of those solutions include greater and easier access to community solar offerings and the ability to receive discounts directly on your utility bill. And the solutions don't end there. If you live in Massachusetts, please take a few minutes and help make our state a little bit better! #electricity #gas #energy #communitysolar #energyburden #renewables

News from #REDI Member, Entergy Texas! Southeast Texas is experiencing extraordinary economic and population growth, leading to a significant rise in electricity demand and the urgent need for Entergy Texas to add 40% more generation capacity to its power grid in four years. To help address this challenge, Entergy Texas filed an application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas to seek approval of two state-of-the-art natural gas power plants to be named Legend and Lone Star. “The Legend and Lone Star Power Stations will address the critical need for increased power generation capacity, support increased economic activity throughout the region, and pave the way for sustainable energy solutions that will benefit Southeast Texas for decades to come,” said Eliecer Viamontes, president and CEO of Entergy Texas. “These future-forward projects are projected to save customers approximately $370 million over the lifespan of the plants.” The Legend Power Station is a 754-megawatt combined cycle combustion turbine facility that will be located in Port Arthur, Texas. As a commitment to modernizing the way Entergy Texas serves its customers, this project will be carbon capture-enabled and feature a hydrogen-capable combustion turbine. Upon completion, the $1.46 billion investment will produce enough reliable and sustainable energy to power nearly 190,000 homes–adding a significant amount of generation capacity to the Southeast Texas power grid while striving to minimize environmental impacts. The Lone Star Power Station is a 453-megawatt combustion turbine facility that will be located near Cleveland, Texas. The $753 million investment to further modernize the power grid features a hydrogen-capable combustion turbine. Once operational, Lone Star’s cutting-edge technology will provide enough efficient and affordable energy to power over 110,000 homes. These proposed 24/7 dispatchable power generation resources are expected to be in service by 2028 and will bring a total of $2.8 billion in economic benefits to the region. Additionally, the construction and operation of these power plants will offer substantial employment opportunities for local communities.
