The most pressing topics in health care, including combatting burnout, nursing workforce challenges, financial stability and more were the themes Sanford Health leaders discussed at the Becker's Healthcare 14th Annual Meeting. Erica DeBoer, chief nursing officer, was invited to join two panel discussions with a focus on preparing for future nursing staff and health equity. As a seasoned ER nurse I share these many frustrations and the moral distress that comes with not being able to provide adequate, timely and quality care to our patients. Understanding that many have tried to use other avenues to seek assistance only to have been turned to the ED, others are not educated as to alternative options and what truly is an emergency. Receiving patients angry and seeing the nurse as the barrier when others have told them “to go right away” for non-urgent issues. Others who are so sick and you cannot accommodate them timely. Government needs to include those frontline staff as key stakeholders. They live/see the actual barriers and have valuable real solutions to them.
