‘Smart Cities require smart governance.’ The Routledge Companion to Smart Design Thinking in Architecture & Urbanism, edited by Dr. Mitra Kanaani - Architectural Doctorate - Arch. D., has been published, with the chapter ‘From Smart to Autonomous Cities on the Eve of AI’ authored by Andrew Whalley OBE, Tim Williams and Andy Watts. With digital tools in architecture and urban design yet to be fully exploited, Andrew, Tim and Andy consider the implications of generative AI on the future of our cities and their development, and its impact on the architecture and urban design profession. The risks and opportunity of advanced digital technology — the power of data — need to be balanced, demand private and public sector collaboration, ethical accountability, and a strong commitment to ensuring the technological transformation in our cities is focused on shaping and creating equitable, healthy and successful places. ‘There is no better time to begin laying the foundation for limitless innovation in the interest of all.’ Find out more about the publication here → https://lnkd.in/efPpeFBb #AI #Architecture #DesignThinking

AI is revolutionizing the way we map and track urban growth. UN-Habitat's recent pilot in eThikwini, South Africa, has successfully used AI to detect informal settlements on satellite imagery, providing up-to-date maps to the local government. This has allowed for better planning and prioritization of urban upgrading interventions, resulting in improved delivery of basic urban services. Exciting advancements like this prove the potential of AI to positively impact urban development around the world. source: AI and Cities Risks, Applications and Governance , UN Habitat. #urbanandregionalplanning #urbandesign #masterplaning #architecture #architecturelovers #illustrations #urban #urbanarchitecture #portfolio #architecture #architectureportfolio #renderlovers #architecture #architecturedesign #landscape #chennai #monumental #render #renderlovers #architecturestudent #architecture #landscape #archi #archidaily #render #renderlovers #mixed_use #architecturestudent #rendering #renderlovers #landscape #architecturedesign #architecturestudent #architecturelovers #portfolio #architecture #architectureportfolio #renderlovers #architecture #architecturedesign #landscape #chennai #monumental #render #renderlovers #architecturestudent #architecture #AI #UrbanDevelopment #Innovation

Fariba Makooi, NCARB, AIA, Principal at Fischer + Makooi Architects, shared her experiences designing some of New York City’s most impactful projects. From navigating zoning complexities with the transformative City of Yes initiative to integrating AI tools, Fariba shows how thoughtful design and technology are reshaping urban landscapes. Highlights include: *Designing a 17-story residential tower and a 25-story two-tower development, tackling urban density and zoning challenges. *Leveraging zoning incentives to create affordable housing and advance innovative designs. *Using AI to optimize layouts, streamline processes, and save time for creative exploration. Fariba’s advice: “Complexity fosters creativity. Embrace challenges, stay curious, and keep learning.” A big thank you to Fariba for sharing her inspiring insights! And last but not least, a huge thanks to Society of American Registered Architects, Fabiyan Pembelski, and all the SARA National 1st AI winners! Here’s a recap of Day 6! Today, I want to talk about something that’s close to my heart—culture in architecture. In 2020, I wrote my thesis on integrating African cultural elements into architecture, and it’s an idea I’ve carried with me ever since. As African cities grow and modernize, we’re losing that deep connection to our heritage in our buildings. But I believe we can change that. DIRAH AI isn’t just about using technology to design smarter buildings; it’s about using AI to celebrate our rich cultural identities through design. What if we could use AI to bring the soul of African design back into modern architecture? Imagine facades inspired by Maasai traditions or design elements that reflect the diverse cultures across Africa. With DIRAH AI, I want to provide architects with tools to not only create sustainable, climate-responsive buildings but also celebrate the unique cultures that make African architecture so special. It’s time to rethink how we design and build for the future—where culture and technology come together in harmony. How do you think culture can influence modern architecture? Let’s discuss in the comments! 🔗 Visit dirah.ai #AfricanArchitecture #CulturalExpression #SustainableBuilding #DIRAHAI #MaasaiInspiredDesign #ArchitectureWithSoul #TechForGood

Why I’m Creating the Nexus Thesis Project: A Personal Insight 🛠️ Today, I won’t be posting about the latest progress on my Nexus project, but instead, I want to share the why behind it. As an architect passionate about the future of urban living, I’ve always been driven by the idea of creating spaces that go beyond the traditional model. The Nexus Thesis Project is my exploration into what the future city could look like—where technology, AI, and human interaction blend seamlessly to create more sustainable, efficient, and dynamic environments. This project isn’t just about designing buildings or districts; it’s about asking bigger questions: How can architecture evolve to support technological advances? How can cities become more adaptable, resilient, and integrated with artificial intelligence? How can we build spaces that not only serve us but also reflect the endless potential of what’s possible? The Nexus project is my answer to these questions, and it’s a way for me to contribute to the conversation about future-proofing our cities. It's a deep dive into architectural innovation and a chance to push boundaries. I believe that architecture has the power to shape the future, and with Nexus, I aim to not only inspire others but also spark important conversations on how we can create the cities of tomorrow. If you’re passionate about the future of urban design, architecture, or technology, let’s connect! I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and feedback as we continue to reimagine the possibilities of our built environment. #WhyNexus #ArchitecturalInnovation #UrbanDesign #FutureCities #ArchitectureWithPurpose #AIInArchitecture #SmartCities #BuildingTheFuture #DesignThinking #FutureProof #TechInDesign #UrbanPlanning #InnovationInArchitecture #ArchitecturalVision #NextGenArchitecture
