As faithful readers of my LinkedIn posts know, I stepped out of my comfort zone last year and launched Harvey Legal Consulting. The year-plus since has been a time of growth and discovery learning, but one of the hidden gems has been the opportunity to meet and learn from successful people who took their own leap of faith long before I did. Grit, determination, savvy--you name it, they have it in spades. And, thankfully, they also have a great willingness to pay it forward by generously sharing what they've learned along the way. In appreciation, I want to highlight some who've taken the road less traveled, and are making it happen every day. Starting with John Grindle and Grin Events. John and his team provide "professionally hosted fun and games," using play "to create meaningful social connections which lead to better-engaged workers, more collaborative teams, and an increase in overall productivity." I first met John in 2016 when the company where I worked hired him to organize and execute a team-building event. (John more aptly describes these as "Team Connecting" events) The Philly suburbs cynic in me was immediately won over by John's genuine enthusiasm and real skill in walking that fine line between cheesy and actual fun. The company brought him in a few more times during my tenure there, and during each visit John demonstrated a knack for getting everyone involved and keeping the energy high. It was always good news to hear that John would be coming in. By the Spring of 2020, I had moved on to a new job, the pandemic lockdown had begun, and I was looking for ways to keep our team engaged beyond those early COVID days of Zoom happy hours. I was thrilled to learn that John had presciently already pivoted to an entirely on-line format, and was way ahead of everyone on understanding Zoom's capabilities and how to use them to create a first-class experience for his clients. When I organise team building events, I avoid competitive exercises that would produce losers as well as winners, and possibly make my team members to learn how to work against one another. I’d rather bring in activities that: ✨ Would motivate the team to work together ✨ Help individuals develop their strengths and also address possible weaknesses Also, when the team is struggling with communication issues, inability to meet deadlines and problem-solving challenges, we need the right activities to address these issues for improved team performance. Call us crazy... We do team building that lasts throughout an entire event--not just one or two hours one afternoon. Audiences cite team building as a meaningful experience at live events. The chance to connect with peers is one of the reasons why--after they could resume again--live events came back with a bang (even after virtual solutions had increased and improved). But one golf tournament, build-a-bike, or scavenger hunt isn't going to cut it. These activities are fun and can be a part of a broader team building strategy--but it can't end there. Team building should be integrated throughout an event and extended to interacting with the meat of the event--the information, content, what you want the audience to know and do when they go back into their daily lives--instead of just being an isolated incident.
