In our freshman seminar course, The HEART Project took a deep dive into one of the most common interview questions: “Tell me about yourself.” But instead of just practicing responses, we’re going deeper using the 4D Model of Career Exploration and Development by Katharine Brooks, starting with Discover. Through CliftonStrengths, students engaged in the “Discover” phase, where they explore and define their unique strengths. This process is transformational. They’re moving beyond simply listing skills to truly understanding and articulating what makes them valuable. The shift is powerful: it’s about discovering not just what they can do, but who they are and developing their strengths in and out of the classroom. When our students go through this “Discover” process, they become motivated to persist every single day, build self-efficacy and leverage relationships and partnerships on campus. They realize that they do have something unique to bring to the table and that there is power in partnerships like mentors, professors and campus staff. Seeing students inspired to show up fully in class, in life and in their future careers by leveraging their strengths is why we do what we do.
