QUESTION: How many miles did Spokane Public Schools students run in Cross Country this year? ANSWER: During regular season meets in 2023, approximately 5,000 Cross Country athletes in grades K-12 ran 160,174 miles. That’s equivalent to running the circumference of the Earth 6.43 times! Extracurricular activities like Cross Country provide an opportunity for students to participate in physical activity, experience camaraderie with teammates, and challenge themselves in competition. All SPS sports and extracurricular activities are 100% supported by the local levy, which fills in the gaps not funded by the state. The local levy and state levy assistance provide nearly 14% of Spokane Public Schools' annual operating budget. A replacement levy will be presented to voters on the Feb. 13, 2024, ballot. Average annual school fees for day pupils at private schools in the UK in 2022 were over £14,000. With a potential 15 years of fees, if your child attends from three to eighteen, the cost of attending a private school could easily hit £200,000. And that’s before you take any siblings into account! School fees paid by parents are generally exempt for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes, but many will need additional help to support the cost of their child’s education. Grandparents may step in, however IHT implications are likely to be greater for them. If you’re considering contributing to school fees for your grandchildren, early conversations are vital. 📢 Fund Our Schools VA, Voices, and Virginia's youth need your voice! 📢The Virginia House and Senate will release their proposed budgets on Sunday, 2/18, and we need to make sure that our legislators make substantial investments in our public schools. 📢JLARC’s study this summer showed what we already knew – that the state isn’t investing its fair share of the cost of creating great public schools for every student in every zip code. We need lawmakers to follow up and make real changes. 📢Use the form below to contact your legislators and urge them to prioritize school funding in the upcoming proposed budgets: https://ow.ly/2Mkz50QAf4Q

All of my Kansas Friends....Please reach out to your local legislators regarding HB 2738. In our journey to try to get Special Education to be fully funded at the statutory requirement of 92% of excess costs, there is a new wrench. In short, HB 2738 restructures the funding formula and requires districts to calculate funding sources such as Medicaid and LOB (Local Option Budget) monies into their funding....this results in districts LOSING Special Education funding, rather than gaining new dollars that the state is required to provide. In my district, the direct impact equates to approximately $650,000 less dollars. Across the State of Kansas, the overall impact would be $82.3 million less for our most vulnerable population of students. Fully funded special education is good for all Kansas students! New post on the Office for Education Policy blog w/ Josh B. McGee: we examine how Arkansas charter schools are funded and spend their money, compared to traditional public schools. While the charter sector has consistently grown since the early 2000s, charters have consistently spent less per pupil than TPS. They also receive less revenue per pupil. This is one of the best explanations of Texas public school funding I have seen, so far. So we are clear, the folks in Austin put pressure on local appraisal districts to increase the taxable value of our homes. Then, when they collect more dollars because the values have increased so much, the State keeps the extra. The schools only get to keep what Austin allows. Think about this: if Austin allowed school districts to keep what is collected, there wouldn’t be a need for as many school bond elections. Some capital projects could be funded out of the taxes already collected. https://lnkd.in/g7xS3ePB
