Since September 2023, the Grotius Leadership Institute (GLI) has been organizing monthly events inviting speakers to share their leadership insights, tips, and experiences. Grotius is an institute that helps young men to be a better version of themselves through virtue-based leadership. We aim to provide a venue where male students and young professionals can come together and foster friendships among themselves. It is named after the Dutch statesman, humanist, and lawyer, Hugo Grotius. The following statement is ascribed to him, and it underlines the importance of virtues among leaders, which exemplifies our aspirations: “A man cannot govern a nation if he cannot govern a city; he cannot govern a city if he cannot govern a family; he cannot govern a family unless he can govern himself; and he cannot govern himself unless his passions are subject to reason.” In the upcoming months, past events will be highlighted on this page, showcasing insights and highlights of what we do in Grotius. We will also post our upcoming events here. Should you be interested to join us, please refer to the contact details and links in our posters and announcements, or drop a message to Jeffrey Mennen or Robin Maximus.

In the work of service, leadership isn’t about titles or power; it’s about making a positive impact, fostering collaboration, and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. Speaking of leadership, if you work in public or charter schools in Texas, have you connected with the Association for Compensatory Educators of Texas (ACET)? There’s no better time than now to join a network of great leaders across Texas who are making a significant impact through compliance, policy, funding, and much more. Something we rarely discuss but is so important to science: Collaborations. 3 things I have learned over the years: 1. Work with people you trust. This is the number 1 rule I live by. Can I express opposing ideas and concerns in a healthy way? Do they respect me as much as I respect them? Are they willing to put in the work? Do they behave in ethically responsible ways? 2. Use your network. When you start a new collaboration it isn’t always easy to answer the questions above. In these cases, I ask around. What’s it like to work with this person? Would they work with someone again? Why yes/no? 3. Dare to say no. This is possibly the most difficult one. But the times I have said no, or withdrew myself from a project, all the things I worried about did not happen. In fact, in most cases it even resulted in better opportunities. That said, it’s a learning process and something we should discuss more frequently. Something that was specifically build in to the program of the mini-leadership conference in Reims thanks to Birgit Schyns.
Super interesting advice for academic collaborations. Chimes with some discussions we had at our Leadership Mini-conference in Reims. https://lnkd.in/eeDWbUFB Urszula Łagowska Martyna Śliwa Kimberley Breevaart

The transition from professor to department chair is a challenging one— not only will your relationship with the faculty members you know as peers change, but you will take on additional responsibilities to the institution as a bridge to administration. Your role is vital to the smooth operation of your department, but often there is very little guidance on taking on these new challenges and developing a strategic plan. Our goal is to bridge the gap and empower you with comprehensive training on the national contexts and departmental initiatives that will help you be an effective department chair. That's why we’ve collaborated with Martin Kurzweil, Ithaka S+R, Carolyn Dever, and George Justice to develop our Strategic-Leadership Program for Department Chairs. Whether you’re navigating your first year or are an experienced chair, our program offers valuable resources to help you develop as a leader while managing the responsibilities of the role and contributing to your institution’s success. We at UCD Smurfit Executive Development were delighted to host Ronan O’Gara in partnership with Boyden Ireland on Tuesday, 8th October. This second annual Boyden Ireland Assembly—an exclusive annual event that connects international leaders with Ireland's C-suite executives and NEDs. Professor Joe Peppard, who interviewed Ronan, emphasised the importance of reframing executive education, highlighting curiosity, a growth mindset, and the drive to push boundaries and learn new things. “Ronan is a distinguished leader who has overcome countless obstacles, through difficult transitions, both on and off the field,” explained Tim Wray, Director of UCD Smurfit Executive Development. Ronan O’Gara shared his perspective on leadership, stressing the significance of genuine connections, caring, and building trust. He also discussed the dual role of a head coach in managing both staff and players to achieve excellence. “When people are engaged and when people are aligned and want the best for each other, that creates a good environment,” said O’Gara. “You have to get to know them and understand what makes them tick to get the best out of them. Before you get the player, you have to get the person. Get the person, and hone the player.” Please click on link below to see the full press release: https://lnkd.in/eGGF44FS For our portfolio of courses please see link below: https://lnkd.in/eDvtRnUv For all enquiries please contact us on: exec.dev@ucd.ie James Bannigan Tim Wray Joe Peppard Avril Mannion Patrick Murray Make-A-Wish Ireland Boyden Svetlana Malceva Laoise L. Founder & CEO - The Hollister Group: Staffing & Cultures | Mental Fitness Coach | Executive Coach | Certified Hypnotherapist | Keynote Speaker
It was truly an honor to participate in Latino Leaders Magazine C-Suite and Board Directors Forum last week, immersing myself in a community of inspiring individuals. During the event, I had the privilege of engaging in a fireside chat with @JorgeFerraez, the co-founder and publisher of Latino Leaders Magazine, where we delved into the crucial topic of leadership and drew insights from my 35-year journey at the helm of The Hollister Group. Something I’ve been thinking about since last week, is it’s essential to recognize our shared humanity amidst this chaotic world. We are all on a quest to evolve into the best version of ourselves. The cornerstone of this journey is self-awareness—an indispensable tool for identifying our blind spots and fostering continuous growth. For me, the pursuit of self-awareness is not a destination but an ongoing journey. It's a reminder that, left unchecked, we may inadvertently perpetuate patterns that no longer serve what we are up to in our lives. I truly feel self-awareness is one of the most critical leadership traits to work on as it can be a true game changer. In doing so, we contribute not only to our personal growth but also to a world that will undoubtedly benefit the growth of our families, communities, and organizations.

Happy International Women’s Day! I have the privledge to lead and take part in many Women’s Leadership groups at work including giving women’s leadership talks and mentoring. I strongly believe the value behind today. You never know the full impact you can have on a person. A couple quotes that resonate with me and I wanted to share: - “Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It’s about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” ― Brené Brown - “You can always tell who the strong women are. They are the ones you see building one another up instead of tearing each other down.” – Unknown - “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader.” – Dolly Parton - “I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.” – Emma Stone - “Empowering those around you to be heard and valued makes the difference between a leader who simply instructs and one who inspires.” – Adena Friedman
