23rd June is #INWED24 (International Women in Engineering Day). Launched by the Women's Engineering Society some 11 years ago, this annual celebration supports and encourages young women and girls to take up #engineering careers – and is clearly a worthwhile initiative (2021 figures indicate that in the UK, just 16.5% of engineers are women). Reflecting on International Women's Day yesterday, engineering remains a male majority profession with key barriers still facing aspiring female engineers. That said, organisations have realised the higher value in hiring from diverse talent pools, leading to huge progress in closing the gender gap. Groups like Women's Engineering Society continually champion women in engineering. More industry leaders are playing their part too, providing meaningful opportunities and breaking down stereotypes. Consequently, the number of women in engineering has almost doubled in the last decade. The campaign to diversify engineering is ongoing, yet it’s clear that women are playing a pivotal role. #INWED24 #womeninstem #diversity
