"There is a wild zone, where possibility lives; and... let's go there", says Nora Bateson in this short video. This is a powerful message for meeting the #metacrisis and the predicaments it is consisted of. Unfortunately we have not evolved to think holistically, in an #ecological, all-inclusive manner, while the vast majority of our internal thinking processes remain outside our cognitive functions. We never decide what to think without proper training and lots of practice. Daniel Kahneman broke down the distinction between "Thinking Fast and Slow", where the first is automatic and remains outside our cognition, while the second is will-powered and cognition-based: it's what we call conscious thought. We mainly think fast, responding to environmental stimuli, as our 🧠 are environmental response mechanisms evolved to help us face the external world in an efficient way that will lead to perpetrating our "selfish genes", as Richard Dawkins would have it. But even when we consciously think, when we apply most careful and focused thought processes - thinking slow, that is - our sense-making, the corresponding conclusions and the deriving decisions and actions are primary based to our past experiences, stored information and notions (the "memes" we have in our heads), proper #logic training and our ability to apply it in order to see beyond and above complexity, uncertainty and the chaos of the Cosmos. "The mind cannot think without the familiar receptors", Aristotle observed long time ago. However, once the mind has *some* familiar receptors, it becomes their slave, misapprehending its own property for the wholeness of the world, missing to see that however many receptors it may have, they are just a small part of the set of receptors existing in the world. No person is or will ever be able to have all the receptors conquered and stored, analyzed and comprehended and easy-to-use in everyday life: there is simply not enough time to do it, while we also miss the "bandwidth" to do it. Therefore, what one may ever achieve is specialize in some domain and consciously use one's receptors to perform better for the self, the social group and the cosmos. This is exactly why we have evolved as a social being, for without other people's thought processes, decisions and actions we would never make it on our own. Nicholas Christakis explores this idea in his fabulous book "Blueprint, the Evolutionary Roots of the Good Society". Being so, we miss to consciously apprehend the vast #complexity of both the self and the cosmos. We understand complication, which is good for engineering solutions, not complexity. We think linearly, while holistic thinking is required for complexity, involving teams-of-thinkers properly trained. So, we mostly miss to reach accurate conclusions, leading to despair and bad solutions. What can we do? My answer is simple: understand thyself and instead of being egoistic, become social, build thinking teams and apply systems-thinking.
Why is it important to understand how our identity shifts and changes as we maneuver through the world and participate in different settings? UWC Atlantic College students tackle this and many other questions in Systems Transformation Pathway: Leadership for Just Futures - a new pilot course as part of their Diploma Programme (DP). The innovative curriculum created collaboratively by the school and the IB shines a spotlight on transformative change, systems leadership and making the world a fairer place for the future.
