"Choosing a Math Teacher: Focus on Expertise, Not Ethnicity. Qualifications, Teaching Skills, and Passion for Mathematics are What Truly Matter." It's important to note that discriminating between individuals based on their nationality or native language proficiency is not ethical or acceptable behavior. Math teachers, regardless of their nationality or linguistic background, should be evaluated based on their qualifications, expertise in mathematics, teaching skills, and ability to effectively communicate mathematical concepts to students. The focus should be on finding the best math teacher for the job based on their qualifications, teaching abilities, and dedication to helping students learn and succeed, rather than on factors such as nationality or linguistic background. Discrimination based on such factors is not only unethical but also undermines the principles of equality and fairness in education.

To escape academic tasks, a child may engage in disruptive and/or off-tasks behaviors not because he or she is lazy or “bad”, but because they might not have the cognitive or academic skills to understand the academic content. Identifying students with a learning disability and providing the right support can do wonders for their academic efficacy, behaviors, and motivation.

Reimagining professional development with The Literacy Architects — we host communities of practice for teachers, leaders, and professors on the science of reading.
Should every teacher be a "literacy teacher" to help our secondary students succeed? I would say yes. We know that part of the learning process is students being able to transfer their learning to different situations. And with reading, that can mean being able to take the multisyllabic word attack routine and the questioning strategy they learned in ELA class and use it with their social studies, science, and math texts. It's possible that this transfer will happen organically, but it would be much faster and more effective if those content area teachers also knew about these literacy strategies and were able to reinforce them with students. Imagine a social studies teacher dividing the word "revolution" into syllables, or a science teacher talking about the morphemes in "microscope." A recent article in The Hechinger Report has a few real-life examples, along with some commentary about the lack of teacher training in this area.

Award-winning math educator. Experienced working with students in under-resourced communities and schools. Published writer in mainstream and specialty media. Looking for my next great opportunity.
As a math educator reading testing and proficiency results, I ask myself: 1. Is there something inherently unique about math that presents special difficulties for students, especially those in under-resourced areas? If so, how do we address them? 2. Does something happen in math classes that is a barrier to learning, that maybe is not a normal characteristic of other subject class environments? E.g., are math teachers more stressed and passing on that stress to students? 3. Is the fact that many students don't relate math to real life more of a barrier to learning than we even think? We need diverse folks tackling these issues.
