🎓 The Value of Continuing Education 🎓 I speak with seasoned procurement professionals daily, many of who them have built impressive careers based on years of experience and expertise. However, more often than not, these great candidates find themselves applying for the same vacancy. There are few differentials at times, but the most successful candidates aren’t just those who rely on what they already know; they are those who continuously seek to grow, adapt, and learn. Yesterday, I spoke with a candidate who had just gained an additional Master’s level qualification to help their profile stand out in a particularly niche area of the market. When I see a candidate who has pursued further education later in their career, it immediately sparks my interest. It’s a clear sign to hiring managers that this person isn’t just coasting on their past achievements. Instead, they are actively investing in their development, staying ahead of industry trends, and embracing opportunities to refine their skills. This speaks to a level of humility and a relentless drive for improvement, both of which are qualities that are highly valued in leadership roles. 🎓 Fresh Out of School? Here’s How to Thrive in Procurement 🎓 Starting your career in procurement might feel overwhelming, but today’s landscape offers incredible opportunities for young professionals. Unlike in the past, labor shortages are creating a wealth of openings across industries. But I know it can still feel daunting when you’re just getting started. One thing hasn’t changed much over the years—most people, fresh out of school, are clueless about procurement, just like I was when I began my career. Back in 1995, a book called The Machine That Changed the World gave me the context I needed when I first started working at Mercedes-Benz. It helped me understand the world around me and sound credible. But just as important were the experienced colleagues who took the time to share their knowledge. The best advice I received back then? “Read the Financial Times every day.” So, what’s my advice for today’s new graduates? 1️⃣ Understand your industry: Read the publications that matter in your field, and build rapport with your stakeholders. 2️⃣ Learn from experienced colleagues: Their decades of expertise are invaluable—seek out mentors. 3️⃣ Don’t worry too much about the technicalities right away: You’ll pick up the procurement jargon along the way. With the right mindset—focused on learning, relationship-building, and curiosity—you’ll set yourself up for success. Procurement may not be the most well-known field, but the opportunities to make a real impact are endless! That’s what defines your career.” (Carlton Fisk) After finishing my undergraduate, I volunteered to work in a certain company so as to gain knowledge and skills as far as my profession is concerned. The Company had a procurement department but I wasn’t accommodated there instead I was offered an opportunity in the customer care department. I really learnt a lot but deep in my heart I was feeling some emptiness. I was feeling like I might not meet my career dream of becoming a procurement officer. I decided to share my plight with the company Human Resource Manager but she didn’t like the idea. She felt like I just wanted to complain. She instead went ahead and convinced the other managers that they no longer require my services and so I should leave.  “Rejection does not mean you aren’t good enough. It just means the other person failed to realize what you have to offer” Mark Amend. I left the company and months later, I got a job as a procurement officer. I successfully managed complex operations and procurement processes leading to cost reduction and improved efficiency. The experience gained is what has impacted my career. What are you doing to future proof procurement talent shortages? A little while ago I was speaking to a senior public sector procurement professional about the PA23 and the changes in skills requirement for Buyers and Officers over the last decade. There has been a dramatic change in procurement going from being seen as a transactional resource to a strategic partner and with it; skills that were requested at Head of Procurment level now being demanded at Buyer level. Along side this change, we have to aknowledge that many professionals in procurement found themselves there through events and talent. Not many if completely honest started their procurement journey through choice at a young age. So during this conversation we got into the topic of recruitment and the challenges faced there too and of course solutions. And I found myself professionally challenging this professional and now I want to extend that challenge wider. What are you doing to engage young talent in procurement? Do you; - engage with local colleges and sixthforms to endorse it as a career choice? - regularly visit and speak at universities to invigorate future talent pools? - offer apprenticeships to your community to find talent in areas where traditional higher education routes aren’t an option? - invite your community in for taster days? - include procurement updates and news in your organisation and community communications? These are just a few of the early engagement strategies that in the long term, future proof your procurement teams and meet some of your organisations social values and added community commitments.
