The R:ETRO online seminar series starts again next week! At 4pm GMT on Tuesday 23 January, Mar Perezts, PhD of Emlyon Business School will give a talk titled "Fighting organized numbness: unpacking necropower and disposability on the margins of (un)learning, (dis)embodiment and (re)orienting." We can all think of situations in which an actor who is operating on behalf of an organisation has treated another in an unconscionable way. The scandal surrounding the treatment of subpostmasters and subpostmistresses by the British Post Office has thrown up a lot of distressing examples of this phenomenon in recent months. What is striking is that, very often, the people who perpetrate these behaviours appear to feel nothing: in the face of the havoc that the wreck, they are comfortably numb. Mar is going to argue that this sort of numbness can be organized: she claims that the way that we move our bodies around, the words that we use, and the things that we think we know about the world can be a result of the structure and discipline of organizational life and, in turn, can strip of us of the empathy that underpins moral life. If that is the case, then one naturally asks how we can unlearn the actions, language, and ideologies that cause the problem. Mar is going to show us how this unlearning could happen and, hence, how we can become un-numb. This is obviously a fascinating topic and I am really looking forward to hear Mar develop it. You can read about the talk and register for it here: https://lnkd.in/dR3-y9DV R:ETRO is hosted by the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation and is co-convened by Rita Mota and me. I hope to see you on Tuesday! #RETROseminars #oxfordsbs #numbness #ethics #businessethics #organizationallearning #onlineseminar
