Nearly a decade ago, I was once asked to define Association for Women in Science in 3 words, and the answer I gave then still holds true... Here's my story with the 3 words: Soon after obtaining tenure, I felt lost since the first few years of my career had revolved around obtaining tenure, and that is when I discovered and joined AWIS. As an AWIS member, I met a whole new group of successful and incredibly supportive women who welcomed her with open arms. With these women, a community was developed, and I found my place. My description of community comes from my AWIS community that was collaborative, mentoring and supportive. By each word, I describe the values of my community associated with that word. Collaboration: A collaborative community works together to achieve goals. The key characteristic of members is trust since because members depend on others whose skills and expertise they cannot check. Members take turns at leading and coordinating, while collaborating for the success of different steps. Members are interdependently connected to foster engagement and action to better community. Mentoring: A community that mentors each other believes in horizontal mentorship, not vertical. A mentoring community offers the guidance to construct community vision and facilitate creative consensus. This community members freely share knowledge to enhance communication skills, teach leadership, provide networking opportunities, and develop strategies for making institutional change that improves the climate. Supportive: A community encourages its members to discover effective responses to the rapidly changing environment without fear of negative criticism from the other members. A community member must be an active participant of the community in order to foster a climate that seeks to improve the each other’s conditions through engagement in a manner that is integrated with opportunities for personal growth.

I am certain that re-sharing this post will be yet another donation request in time when many are being posted on daily basis. You also might think that liver disease doesn’t affect you, so why to support Canadian Liver Foundation. Liver health is a key aspect of our day-to-day living. Your medication, your diet, your stress level, your hormonal imbalance are attributing factors to healthy functioning liver, thus impacting you and your future. From a personal perspective, I am suddenly aware that Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), when untreated can lead to Liver cancer, is one of many symptoms of menopause. Worryingly, NAFLD is also on the rise among young children due to poor diet and lack of physical activity. HepC and HepB are preventable diseases, yet vaccination is on decline. Just few of the examples of the support and prevention our foundation is focused on in our LIVERight initiative coming out in 2024. It’s been a challenging year for charities/foundations at large with donor (whether individual or corporate) fatigue, rising prices and cost of living and world in turmoil in general. There are many causes to support. I personally have few myself. But this year, our household allocated budget for donations will be dedicated to CLF. I believe in our mission and vision, and I can already see the impact in our community. It is not just the patients directly affected by liver diseases, it is the support to our community at large, and the prevention initiatives starting as early as elementary school education. This holiday season, I appeal to you to make a donation to a health charity instead of chasing the perfect gift for a discounted price. The impact is felt by many instead of just the gift recipient and will provide you with a sense of gratitude and reciprocity for the gifts that we are lucky to experience everyday living a healthy life. And I hope that you consider Canadian Liver Foundation. Thank you! #liverhealth #givingtuesday2023 #

A little video I created to highlight Wishtoyo on Native Nonprofit Day 🌟🪶 Did you know that only 0.23% of philanthropic giving goes to Native-led organizations? This day of giving highlights this disparity and uplifts Native people as the ones who have the solutions to the issues our communities face. To help be part of these solutions 👉🏽 go to www.wishtoyo.org and donate! #GiveNative #NativeNonprofitDay

🌟 Exciting News: Supporting Our Veterans 🌟 We are proud to announce our recent collaboration with Team #6 of Leadership Green Bay in their remarkable initiative alongside Veterans 1st of Northeast Wisconsin. Together, we are dedicated to making a significant difference in the lives of veterans facing housing insecurity in our community. 🏡 The Vision: Creating a supportive community for our veterans, the project envisions the construction of 21 cottage homes and a Community Center. This initiative is not just about providing shelter but also about fostering a sense of belonging and support among those who served our country. 🛠 Our Contribution: To aid in the realization of this noble cause, our focus has been on fundraising efforts to construct a carriage house. This essential structure will serve as a central storage facility for tools and materials during the construction phase and later transition to a maintenance and storage hub for the residents and the community. 🤝 Why It Matters: By supporting this project, we're not only contributing to the physical structure of a community but also reinforcing the foundation of support and gratitude for our veterans. It's our way of giving back to those who have given so much. We invite our network to join us in this endeavor, whether through contributions, sharing this message, or volunteering. Together, we can make a substantial impact on the lives of veterans in need. Individual donations can be made here: https://lnkd.in/geS2mgen
