#APATS2024 is now in the bag - humid, hot and occasionally wet Singapore was a fun, busy and pleasant place for a conference. But, what about the conference? Word of the week? CBTA (Ok, I know it's not really a word, but...). In years past it would have been EBT, but this time definitely CBTA. Competency-Based Training and Assessment. It's been a while since I looked, but if I remember correctly, EBT is an implementation of CBTA. Do I have that right? I think so. Anyway, I certainly heard and saw CBTA in the conference hall a lot. Whether it be EBT or CBTA there is a common theme. If you don't mind my condensation, my 'boil for 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened' view - what we are really doing is taking evidence (data) from the real operating environment (the cockpit), distilling the data to find the REAL challenges for our flight deck crew, and then recreating those challenge situations in the simulator. However, rather than simply saying "do this better, until you get it right" (which is kind of what we did in task-based training and our tick-box approach from the past), now we are slicing the way we look at what we do in the cockpit into a number of categories, labeled competencies. Now, I am not an EBT or CBTA guru at all! But I know folks that are. So, if you need that expertise, I have a few email addresses. So, you are probably thinking "What the heck are you waffling on about Neil?" It probably won't be the first or last time that thought hits you, so moving on... My point is this, and if you know me at all, you will see this coming a mile off: Let's review this statement - "Taking evidence from the real operating environment... to find the REAL challenges for our flight deck crew". Now this - "Recreating those challenge situations in the simulator" I would argue strongly that for the greatest majority of "challenges" our current simulators are deficient. We call them full flight simulators, but they aren't. Our current simulators represent the AIRCRAFT extremely well. But the aircraft doesn't operate in a vacuum. It operates in an environment, and currently simulators only represent PART of that environment. Not fully. Not even close. What are our simulators missing? Other traffic and the ATC system. There are two significant threats to an aircraft. One is fundamental - the ground. That is represented quite well in our simulators. But the second significant threat is OTHER AIRCRAFT. Without other aircraft the airport is pretty benign, especially if you ignore buildings and such like. In the air, without other aircraft, flying is pretty easy. But, with other aircraft, things get much harder. And, when there are lots of other aircraft in the sky, we need control, otherwise there would be chaos, which is provided by ATC. If you are 'doing CBTA' you need the ASTi #SERA #SATCE system - Simulated Environment for Realistic ATC - it provides both other traffic and ATC controllers. The full environment is now available.
