I got to hang out with Ken, Austin Powers, Goose and the Pink Ladies all in one night! 🎉 I love my job. Yesterday, I got to spend time with the amazing humans of United Benefit Advisors® (UBA) for their annual fall conference. I started my career in employee benefits 21 years ago as an intern, so it was great to be back! I delivered a keynote about employee engagement and what employees really want from work: ➡️ Cause - they want to feel relevant and be able to answer the question, “Who am I helping and why does it matter?” ➡️ Community - they want to feel seen, included, cared about, and appreciated- not ignored and invisible ➡️ Career - they want opportunities to grow, learn, and contribute, using their strengths consistently to make a difference ALL of us, regardless of generation, want to feel like who we are and what we do matters. We shared stories, connected with each other, laughed, hugged it out, and tapped into everyone’s collective wisdom and ideas. Here’s what we discovered👇 It’s not the grand gestures that engage people and make them feel like they matter. It’s the accumulation of little meaningful moments consistently over time. Last night, we hung out for a costume party with dueling pianos and movie soundtrack singalongs 🎹 What a FUN, life-giving day! I posted last week about how I was thinking about the content of my working week and how I give myself more of the things I love (in my case, interaction with people). In the last week, I have had 3 conversations with friends (completely unrelated to my post) about how they feel about their work and what they might want to do differently to make them more satisfied. Maybe it is because the summer is coming, or maybe it is just an increasing, and positive, trend, but people seem to be giving a lot more thought to what makes them happy. Crafting our jobs so they contain more of the good bits and less of the stuff we don't like can have a huge impact on employee satisfaction, but I wonder how many employers encourage this? As the anniversary of the mass four-day work-week experiment is analyzed, we are seeing a number of companies report significant positive changes around culture and talent rentention with many choosing to maintain the model past the experiment’s parameters. In looking at this from the angle of leading teams—especially as new talent and generations enter the workforce—two questions come to mind. One, would the opportunity to work a four-day work-week structure be a high-priority item that could entice you to switch companies / change your job for? In that same vein, is the model on-par, or of higher priority than salary? Than PTO? Curious about the new structure of motivating factors as it becomes more commonly offered.
