Think of fundraising like gardening. 🌱 You can’t expect a garden to flourish if you’re just watching it from a distance. To truly see it thrive, you’ve got to dig in, get your hands dirty, and tend to each plant with care. It’s the same with fundraising. You can’t just talk about the mission from the comfort of your office. If you've never come face to face with the need your organization is trying to meet, can you really convince yourself to passionately advocate for it? A few things you won't see on my résumé: 1. My husband and I lost our home and almost everything we owned in the Marshall Fire in 2021, and we've spent the past several years becoming experts in things we never set out to master—like total loss home replacement actual costs, the necessity of hydro-seeding after debris removal, and the flammability of various exterior building material options. 2. I became a mother during our rebuild. Nothing in my experience has been richer than facing such catastrophic loss followed by receiving the gift of such awe-inspiring life. 3. I've been busy gardening. First, I apprenticed at a local flower farm, learning all that I could about drip lines, beneficial insects, and weed management. Then I planted a container garden on the shady porch of our temporary housing, and, to my surprise and with so much attentive care, it flourished. 4. We're home at last, and this summer was my first opportunity to put down roots. This year's garden was a giving garden: I vowed to share all that I possibly could. Even after I'd handed a bouquet to every loved one I could think of, the garden's abundance continued to overwhelm me. The more I took, the more it gave. In its just-out September issue, The Chronicle of Philanthropy takes a hard look at how philanthropy can do more for rural areas, highlighting organizations like LOR that are taking unique approaches to helping rural communities. One stat worth noting: "Rural areas receive only about 7 percent of philanthropic spending, even though they account for 14 to 20 percent of the population." Calling all schools & charities... Through our two headline programmes 'Cultivate & Educate' and 'Cultivating Change in the Community' we are striving to encourage and increase in the participation of young people and communities in gardening, 'grow-your-own' activities and spending more time outside in nature to support mental health & overall wellbeing in 2025! The application process is still OPEN! Successful applicants will receive a fantastic bundle of vegetable, herb and flower seeds and the chance to be part of our virtual and in real life communities sharing support, encouragement, tips as well as access to our horticultural specialist. Cultivating Change also run workshops, assemblies & talks and where possible is able to give practical support for the development of school gardens. There is evident need for children to spend more time outside, and engage with gardening based activities. 1 in 6 children/young people in the UK have a diagnosable mental health problem, often continuing into adulthood. Gardening is an excellent way to support wellbeing, it increases confidence and self esteem and helps to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. The hours spent outside by this generation of children is dwindling. It has been reported that 74% of children spend less time outside than a prison inmate!
